CHIRP Programming Software
CHIRP Guide CHIRP Examples

UV5R Support (IMPORTANT Facts)

(1)
CHIRP Daily Developmental Build must be used for UV5R programming.
Stable Release Version 0.2.3 does NOT support the UV5R series.

(2)
CHIRP Daily Build 20121013 and newer works with all versions of UV-5R and
UV-E5.

(3)
CHIRP image (.img) files created by a radio with F/W BFB290 or prior
cannot be used when programming a radio with F/W BFB291 or newer.
The opposite is also true. The image files are NOT transferable.
(See 'Work Around' below)

(4)
To determine which firmware your radio has:
Power the radio OFF. Press and Hold the 3 key. Power the radio ON.
The display will show BFB - - - This is the Firmware release.

(5)
The Settings Tab for BFB291 and newer is still a work in progress.

Creating the Initial CHIRP File

(1) Open the version of CHIRP that matches your radio

(2) 'Download from Radio' to create your initial CHIRP .img file template
(3) Clear all factory loaded frequency data from the CHIRP spreadsheet
(4) Enter your New frequency data to the CHIRP spreadsheet
(5) Save the New .img file
(6) 'Upload to Radio' to store New data

IMPORTANT NOTE:
Although CHIRP image files are interchangeable between radios with Firmware
BFB290 and prior, this is NOT true with newer releases BFB291 and newer.

If you have a radio with Firmware BFB291 and one with BFB293, you MUST
have a separate image file for each.

CHIRP Features

CHIRP software has many features, some of which are not available using the
Baofeng factory software, such as:

• Uses the familiar RX frequency and ± Offset for repeaters

• Allows 7 Character Alpha Tags (was only 6)
• Expands operating range - UHF TX/RX up to 512MHz (was 480MHz)
• Allows Personalizing the Power-on Message
• Upper & Lower Band Limits for TX on VHF & UHF
• TX Inhibit for Scanner Only frequencies
• Remembers the COM port setting between sessions
• Remembers the last folder loaded from or saved to between sessions
• Supports serial ports up to COM256

CHIRP 'WORK AROUND'

CHIRP image (.img) files are not transferable between radios with firmware
BFB290 and prior (BFBold) and BFB291 or newer (BFBnew). They are treated
as two separate radios. This method below resolves the frequency transfer

issue.

Open CHIRP Daily Build 20121013 or later.

Create a template using a radio with BFBold, label accordingly and Save.
Create a second template using a radio with BFBnew and Save.

Fill in the desired frequencies, offsets, etc in template BFBold and Save.
Copy and Paste the fields into template BFBnew.
Save both templates.

You now have identical frequency templates for both series of radios.

Note: The Settings Tab for the BFBnew series is still a work in progress, so
those 'other' options must still be entered manually.

CHIRP FAQs
Q: Error message "Radio did not ACK first contact"

PESONAL NOTE: There is no charge for CHIRP. However, these guys put in a lot of
time as a 'Labor of Love' and a small donation thru PayPal is a great way of showing
your appreciation and saying thank you.
