March 5, 2024

I. Learning Competencies:
Illustrates the permutations of objects. (M10SP-IIIa-1)

Objectives:
a. Illustrate the permutations of objects using different method

II. Subject Matter

A. Topic: Permutation
B. Reference: Purplemath (2024). Factorials
Mathematics Learner’s Material for Grade 10, page 283-290
C. Materials: Laptop, TV, Tape, Worksheets, Visual Aids, Chalk and
chalkboard
D. Skill: Solving
E. Value Focus: Accuracy, Participation
F. Subject Integration: English

III. Procedures
A. Daily Routine
1. Prayer
2. Greetings
3. Classroom Management
4. Checking of Attendance

B. Review of the Previous Lesson

Let the students form one line and instruct them to jump to the
right if the statement is true and jump to the left if the statement
is false.

True 1. The General form of the equation of the circle is

2 2
x + y + Dx+ Ey + F=0
False2. (x 2 +6x-36) is a perfect square trinomial.
True 3. The standard form of the equation of the circle is
(x −h ¿2+¿
True 4. The points at the origin is (0,0)
False5. (x+4 ¿2 =x2 +8 x +14

C. Motivation
Group the students into four and let them arranged the scrambled
letters given for them to form a word out of it and paste it
on the
chalkboard on its corresponding meaning.

“Fix Me, I’m Broken”

1. Factorial
Refers to all whole numbers from the chosen number
multiply by each previous number until reaching 1.
n!= n x (n-1)…

2. Counting
Refers to the process of determining the number of
elements in a set or group by assigning unique value
to each element.
Used for measuring quantity and analyzing patterns.

3. Order
Refers to the number of elements being arranged or
selected in a particular sequence.
Number of ways to arrange 3 distinct items is 3! that is
6

4. Ways
Refers to the different methods or possibilities for
accomplishing a task or solving a problems.
The number of paths to reach a destination

D. Lesson Proper
1. Activity
 Instruct the students to answer the question by group.
 The activity is entitled “Make me a Meal”
There are 4 desserts (donut, pizza, bread and cake) paired
with any 3 drinks (milkshake, coffee and juice). List
down all possible combos of meal you can make out of
the given choices.

2. Analysis
 Let the students answer the following questions.
1. What combos have you made?
2. How many combos did you list down?
3. How did you determine the different possibilities asked for?
4. Did you use any method in order to give the answer? What
is it?

3. Abstraction
 Are you familiar with arrangement that requires order?
 Did you know that the combos you listed is called
permutations?
 Based on your answers, can you give the meaning of
permutation?

Permutation-it refers to the different possible arrangements

of a set of objects considering its order.

Discuss the following:

1. Suppose we have 5 different potted plants and wish to
arrange 3 of them in a row. In how many ways can this be
done?

 We can determine the no. of ways these plants can be
arrange in a row if we arrange only 3 of them at a
time. This arrangement is called permutation.
 The permutation of 5 potted plants taken 3 at a time is
denoted by P(5, 3) or The permutation of n objects
taken r at a time is denoted by P (n, r).

In illustrating the permutation you can either do listing

or fundamental counting principle.
1. Listing - Simply listing down all different ways of
pairs.
2. Fundamental counting principle- There are m ways
of doing something and n ways of doing anything
then there are n x m different ways of doing
both.

Example 1: Given the 4 letter word READ. In how many ways can we
arrange its letter 3 at a time.

Solution: Fundamental counting principle

4*3*2=24
=n(n-1)(n-2)

 First factor is n and succeeding factors decreased

by 1 each time. Last factor is n-2=n-(r-1)
 There are r factors in all start with n.
 Students can do the listing to verify the results.
 Let the students answer the problem earlier.
P (5, 3)

Example 2: In how many ways can 5 people arrange themselves in

a row for picture taking?

Solution: n=5, r=5

P (5, 5) = 5 * 4 * 3 *2 * 1
= 5!
= 120 ways

Thus, P (n, n) =n!

Also, P (8, 8) = 40 320

P (4, 4) = 24

 Used all numbers from n=5 down to 1 which is a

definition of a factorial. So, it is a 5!
 Let students define factorial.
 For convenience, we define 0! = 1

Example 3: In a school club there are 5 possible choices for the

president, secretary, treasurer and auditor. Assuming that
each of them is qualified for any of the positions, in
how many ways can 2 officers be elected?

Address: Brgy. Cabalagnan, Nueva Valencia, Guimaras

Mobile No.: 09999665148
E-mail: [email protected] | Facebook: Cabalagnan National High School
Solution: n=5, r=2
P (5, 2)= 5 * 4
= 20

4. Application
Illustrate the permutation of the objects by using any method
you have learned.

1. Six runners join a race. In how many ways they can be

arranged?
2. In how many ways can 4 people arrange themselves in a
row?

IV. Evaluation
Let the students answer the assessment.
Illustrate the following problems involving permutations by using
any method.
1. A dress shop owner has 6 new dresses that she wants to
display in the window. If the display has 3 mannequins,
in how many ways can she dress them up?
2. In how many ways can you place 9 different books in a
bookshelf?

V. Agreement
Research on what is the formula for solving permutations. Write it in your
notebook.
