Clap and Follow! (Engage the students in an activity to practice body coordination
with verbal communication.) Relate this to real-life listening by emphasizing the
importance of paying attention to people when they are speaking to you, especially if it’s
an important conversation.
1. Share these instructions with the students:
a. When they hear one clap from the leader , tell them this means they should
stand up.
b. When they hear two claps from the leader, they should hop once in place.
c. When they hear three claps, they should rub their belly.
d. When they hear four claps, they should do a 360-degree turn on the spot.
e. When they hear five claps, they should pat their head.
2. Begin the activity! Start with one clap, then two claps, and so on until you have given
the group each instruction once.
3. Now, mix it up! Switch between the five different instructions and begin to pick up the
pace. This is when the eliminations begin.
4. Each time a participant engages in the wrong activity, eliminate them from the game.
Continue until there is one clear winner.
c. Instructions / Delivery
(Discussing the communicative strategy and the factors that can make communication
more effective)
Effective communication strategies are vital to your success in the workplace and in
life. If you don’t know how to talk with others, you may find yourself failing to reach your
goals at work or home, not just professionally but personally as well.
So what makes effective communication? How can you improve your skills? What
should be your communication strategy? What are the types of communication
strategies?
There are Seven Types of Communicative Strategies:
1. Nomination – presenting a particular topic clearly, truthfully, and saying only what is
relevant;
2. Restriction – constraining the response/reaction within a set of categories;
3. Turn-taking – recognizing when and how to speak because it is one’s turn;
4. Topic control – keeping the interaction going by asking questions and eliciting a
response;
5. Topic shifting – introducing a new topic followed by the continuation of that topic;
6. Repair – overcoming communication breakdown to send more comprehensible
messages; and
7. Termination – using verbal and nonverbal signals to end the interaction.
d. Practice
(Practicing the concept learned by identing the type of communicative strategy used in
each number.)

__________ 2. Really?
__________ 3. That’s all for today class, goodbye.
__________ 4. Do you have something to say?
__________ 5. By the way there’s a new shop opening at the mall.
__________ 6. We are talking about communication here, right?
__________ 7. The correct pronunciation of Wednesday is “Wenz-day not Wed-nes-day.
e. Enrichment
Using the types of communicative strategies let the students analyze which is best to
apply in the given situations.

2. The DOH Committee were exchanging ideas about the possible solutions to the
increasing number
of COVID 19 patients.
3. You were told by your Oral Communication teacher to deliver your speech using
English language only.
4. You were chatting with your friends over the phone, when someone knocks on
your door so you
told your friend to give him/her a call later.

mother told
you to pronounce it correctly.
6. A strategy used in recognizing when and how to speak because it is one’s turn.

interaction.

9. The following transitional words such as in addition to, and by the way signals
what type of communicative strategy?
10. It keeps the interaction going by asking questions and eliciting a response.
f. Evaluation
Allow the student to do the activity “For the Record” to summarize the communicative
strategies used in the conversation.
1. Record the conversation between you and your peer group and the transcribe a
short section of it –
it needs to be long enough to illustrate turn taking, topic control, topic nomination,
topic shift, termination and restriction (if possible). Don’t forget to gain permission from
all the
participants before recording.
2. Annotate your transcript. Label the communicative strategies used in the
conversation.
3. Summarize your findings by answering the questions below:
a. Who among your friends decide the conversation topic?
b. Who keeps talk on topic?
c. Who talks the most?
d. Who changes topic most?
e. Who interrupts most?
