Session 101M

Introduction to VMC Building

VERICUT enables you to simulate your CNC machining process. To process your NC
Programs in VERICUT you need a VERICUT Machine Configuration (VMC). A VMC
or sometimes called a Project Template, is a set of VERICUT files configured to enable
VERICUT to accurately simulate your CNC machine tool.

This session will introduce you to how to configure a VMC. This session starts with a
VERICUT project which has the job-related data already setup, but to have VERICUT
process the NC Program you will need to add a Machine and a Control. Once done
processing the NC Program you will save your Project Template for future jobs.

VERICUT V9.3 Session 101M 1

First let’s review the layout of the default VERICUT User Interface:

VERICUT V9.3 Session 101M 2

1. Load a control file for the VMC
• From the Project Tree, select Control
• In the Configure Control > Base Control File
• Shortcut = Training
• File = mc_mill_control.ctl
• Open

Note: The Control file includes rules for how machine codes are interpreted,
associated subroutines, and control settings. When combined with a Machine file,
VERICUT can simulate how a NC machine will respond to G-Code NC program files.

2. Load a machine file for the VMC

• In the Project Tree, select Machine
• In the Configure Machine > Machine File
• Shortcut = Training
• File = mc_mill_machine.mch
• Open

Note: The Machine file includes machine kinematics, models and other machine
properties. When combined with a Control file, VERICUT can simulate how a NC
machine will respond to G-Code NC program files.

• Reset Model

Note: The Reset Model icon causes VERICUT reload all files and rewinds the NC
program file.

Customize the VERICUT Project Template
You have loaded the Machine and Control files and now you will configure the Project
file to suit our needs and preferences.

3. Set Miscellaneous project settings

• Select Project Tree > Collision branch

• Check Machine Collision Detection
• Check Stock and Active Tools’ Holders; Near Miss = 6

Note: The features on the Configure Collision menu enable you to turn on Machine
Collision Detection and to specify the Tool to Stock/Fixture collision conditions that
you want VERICUT to check during processing.

• Select Project Tree > Setup branch

• Fast Feed (FPM) = 12700
• Check the Check Spindle Direction

Note: Features on the Motion tab enable you to provide important settings related to
the motion displayed during the simulation, such as how often the display is updated
(to reduce processing time), setting the minimum and maximum range of the
Animation Speed slider, and what checks are made during cutting.

• Select Ribbon Bar > Project tab > Project group > Settings > Properties
tab
• Check Enable NC Program Review
• Check Replace Material During Review
• Check Record Cutting Conditions
• Select OK

Note: The Features on the Project Settings tab enable you to set tolerances for the
simulation, set NC Program Review options and other general properties for the
VERICUT simulation session.

4. Customize the Status window
• Select the Status icon from the Toolbar
• Set the window to be floating (if docked)
• Select a Vertical Tile
• Set Group Visibility and Group Information displayed as shown below or
as you desire.

Note: This panel provides status information about the simulation and what
would be occurring on the CNC machine. The information displayed can be
configured.
Click on the Set Group Visibilty icon to display the menu shown below
which enables you to specify which information groups you want displayed in the
Status panel. Right-click in a Group displayed in the Status panel to display a
window that enables you specify the features that you want displayed in that
Group.

• Dock the Status window as desired and then Overlay it for quick access.

5. Setup views and layouts
• Ribbon > View > Layout group > select
• In the Graphic Area of the Machine view, rotate view so that is near to the front
of machine, then right mouse click and select Snap to Orthogonal View

• In the View Cube right mouse click on and select Set front, then rotate view
as desired right mouse click on and select Set home

• Ribbon Bar > View tab > Translucency group > Translucency, use slider bar to
set the desired Translucency

Note: The features on the View Attributes window tab enable you to control the
display characteristics of the Workpiece and Machine view.

• Ribbon > View > Saved Layout group you can see current saved views. Press
Capture Layout to store this layout

Note: The saved Layout settings are saved with the Project file.

VERICUT V9.3 Session 101M 6

6. Save project settings
• Ribbon Bar > File tab > Project File group > Save As…
• Shortcut= Working Directory
• File Name = mill_session_101m_VMC_build.vcproject
• Save

Test the VERICUT Project Template

It is a good practice to test your VMC with NC Programs and job-related data that has
been proven on real NC machine.

7. Run the simulation

• Reset Model
• Play

Notice simulation behaves as expected

VERICUT V9.3 Session 101M 7

Finalize the VERICUT Project Template
Now that the VMC has been tested you can remove the job-related data and save the
VMC for future jobs.

8. Remove the job-related data

• Project tree, delete Fixture models
• Project tree, delete Stock models
• Project tree, delete Work Offsets
• Project tree, delete Program_Zero CSYS
• Project tree, delete Tooling
• Project tree, delete NC Program

9. Save project settings

• Ribbon Bar > File tab > Project File group > Save Project
• Shortcut = Working Directory
• File = mill_session_101m_VMC_build.vcproject
• Save

Note: This template can now be used for all new jobs simulated on this machine. A
Project Template can also be referenced by a CAD/CAM interface for an effortless
setup.

10. Add template to Welcome Screen

• Ribbon Bar > Help tab > Help group > Welcome
• Select Add a Template
• Shortcut = Working Directory
• File = mill_session_101m_VMC_build.vcproject

Conclusion
In this session, you have seen how to configure a VMC. The session started with a
VERICUT project which has the job-related data already setup, but to have VERICUT
process the NC Program you had to add a Machine and a Control. Once done processing
the NC Program you saved your Project Template for future jobs.
