Session 103M

Add 3D models to the machine

The Machine file contains the information required by VERICUT to simulate G-Code
NC program files. Machine files contain such information as: machine axes, connect
order, kinematics, 3D models, machine collision tables, travel limits, etc.

This session will show you how to add 3D models to the machine kinematics of a mill in
order to enhance the VERICUT simulation and give you the capability to detect machine
collisions. The machine kinematics, Control and Job setup are complete, you need only
add 3D models.

VERICUT V9.3 Session 103M 1

1. Add 3D models to the Base and Motion components
• In the Project Tree, select Base
• In Configure Component: Base > Component tab
• Appearance = Select the Appearance Pallet and select a desired appearance
from the available settings

• With Base selected

• Right-click > Add Model > Model File
• Shortcut = Training
• Units = millimeters
• File Name = mc_mill_machine_5ax_base.stl
• Open
• In the Graphic Area; Right-click > Display Axis > Model

Note: the Model (XcYcZc) axes represents the coordinate system of a model. Each
model has its own local coordinate system.

VERICUT V9.3 Session 103M 2

Note: The 3D models (STL files) for this training session were exported from a
CAD system relative to the VERICUT Component Axes locations.

Note: Model file tolerances, Model files, such as Stereo lithography (STL)
exported from CAD systems should be created using tolerances appropriate for
how they will be used in VERICUT. For example, models that will be used as
machine components probably do not need to be as accurate as models that will
be used by AUTO-DIFF to check for gouges or excess material. Outputting CAD
models with excessively small tolerance values can result in very large model file
sizes that cause VERICUT to use large amounts of memory.

• With X selected
• Set Color = Select the Color Pallet and select a desired
• Set Rapid Rate = 5000
• Add model, File Name = mc_mill_machine_5ax_x.stl

VERICUT V9.3 Session 103M 3

• With Z selected
• Set Appearance = Select the Appearance Pallet and select a desired
appearance
• Set Rapid Rate = 5000
• Add model, File Name = mc_mill_machine_5ax_z.stl

The component and model are not located correctly. The Z axis Zero position
should be 600mm from the machine origin, so a 600mm offset needs to be added
to the Z axis component.

Let’s play with the Lock Models feature

• Select Lock Models Off to toggle to Lock Models On is set

Note: Lock models, locks models in position on the screen so you can freely
move components around without having to move the attached models after.

• In Configure Component: Z
• Translate tab
• Position = 0 0 600
• Press Enter on your keyboard

VERICUT V9.3 Session 103M 4

Notice that now the component is located correctly but the model is not. In this
case because the models where output in reference to thr VERICUT components
we do not want to Lock Models

• Select Undo

Note: Use this icon to Undo changes made in the Project Tree. The icon will
be grayed out until a change is made in the Project Tree. Use this icon to
Redo changes that you have used the Undo feature on. The icon will be grayed
out until the Undo feature is used.

• Select Lock Models On to toggle to Lock Models Off

• In Configure Component: Z
• Translate tab
• Position = 0 0 600
• Press Enter on your keyboard

VERICUT V9.3 Session 103M 5

Notice that now the component and model are located correctly

• With Spindle selected

• Set Appearance = Select the Appearance Pallet and select a desired
appearance
• Add model, File Name = mc_mill_machine_5ax_spindle.sor

Now let’s add a primitive model so that we can see when the spindle is on

• With Spindle selected

• Right-click > Add Model > Block
• In Configure Component: Z
• Model tab > Inherit (un-check)
• Set Color = Select the Color Pallet and select a desired
• LWH = 25 25 10

• Translate tab
• Position = 90 0 190

VERICUT V9.3 Session 103M 6

• With Y selected
• Set Appearance = Select the Appearance Pallet and select a desired
appearance
• Set Rapid Rate = 3500
• Add model, File Name = mc_mill_machine_5ax_y.stl

• With A selected
• Set Appearance = Select the Appearance Pallet and select a desired
appearance
• Set Rapid Rate = 3000
• Add model, File Name = mc_mill_machine_5ax_a.stl

• With C selected
• Set Rapid Rate = 3000
• Set Appearance = Select the Appearance Pallet and select a desired
appearance
• Add model, File Name = mc_mill_machine_5ax_C.stl

2. Save the machine file

• Ribbon Bar > Machine/Control tab > Machine group > Save As …
• Shortcut= Working Directory
• File Name = mill_session_103m_add_3d_models_to_the_machine.mch
• Save

VERICUT V9.3 Session 103M 7

3. Add 3D models to the non-motion components

• With Base selected

• Right-click > Append > Other
• With Other selected
• Right-click > Rename > Enclosure
• In Configure Component: Enclosure
• Component tab
• Set Appearance = Select the Appearance Pallet and select a desired
appearance
• Check Translucent
• Add model, File Name = mc_mill_machine_5ax_enclosure.stl

• With Base selected

• Right-click > Append > Other
• With Other selected
• Right-click > Rename > Control
• Set Appearance = Select the Appearance Pallet and select a desired
appearance
• Check Translucent
• Add model, File Name = mc_mill_machine_5ax_control.stl

• With Base selected

• Right-click > Append > Other
• With Other selected
• Right-click > Rename > Door
• Set Appearance = Select the Appearance Pallet and select a desired
appearance
• Check Translucent
• Add model, File Name = mc_mill_machine_5ax_door.stl

VERICUT V9.3 Session 103M 8

4. Save the machine file
• Ribbon Bar > Machine/Control tab > Machine group > Save Machine
• Shortcut= Working Directory
• File Name = mill_session_103m_add_3d_models_to_the_machine.mch
• Save

5. Run the simulation

• Reset Model
• Play
