Title: A comparison of burette and measuring cylinder

Aim: To determine which of the two pieces of apparatus, a burette or measuring cylinder is
more accurate for measuring the volumes of liquids and solutions

Introduction: Today we will be doing a comparison between a burette and measuring

cylinder to determine which measuring apparatus is better at certain activities. The burette
is commonly used in titration experiments due to its high precision and accuracy in delivering
precise volumes of liquids. Measuring cylinders, on the other hand, are versatile tools suitable
for general volume measurements but may lack the precision of a burette.

Apparatus:
 50cm3 Bburette
:
 10 cm3 or 25cm3 Mmeasuring cylinder
 Funnel
 Retort Stand
 Beaker
 Clamp
 Distilled Water

Procedure:

(a1) The burette was filled up to a convenient graduation mark with distilled water, and the
burette reading was recorded to the nearest 0.05 cm3.
(2) Thirty drops of water were carefully delivered from the burette into the measuring cylinder.
(3) The new burette reading was recorded as 6 cm3, and the volume of water delivered from the
burette was calculated by finding the difference between the second and first burette readings, (b
- a) cm3.
(4) The reading in the measuring cylinder was recorded to the nearest 0.5 cm3 for the 25 cm3
measuring cylinder or to the nearest 0.2 cm3 for the 10 cm3 measuring cylinder. The water
collected in the measuring cylinder was not discarded at any time during this exercise.
(5) Another thirty drops of water were delivered from the burette into the measuring cylinder.
(6) The new volume change in the burette was recorded, i.e., the third burette reading, c cm3,
minus the first burette reading, a cm3, calculated as (c - a) cm3.

(7) The above procedure was repeated at least four more times, with a further 30 drops of water
delivered each time, and both the change in burette reading and the volume of water in the
measuring cylinder were recorded. The results were tabulated.
) Fill the burette up to a convenient graduation mark with distilled water. Record the burette
reading to the nearest 0.05 cm3
b) Carefully deliver 30 drops of water from the burette into the measuring cylinder
(i) record the new burette reading, 6 cm3, and calculate the volume of water delivered from the
burette, i.e. the difference between the second and first burette readings- (b- a) cm3;
(ii) record the reading in the measuring cylinder to the nearest 0.5 cm3 for the 25 cm3
(measuring cylinder) or to the nearest 0.2 cm3 for the 10 cm3 (measuring cylinder). (Do not
discard the water which is collected in the measuring cylinder at any time during this exercise.)
(c) Deliver a further 30 drops of water from the burette into the measuring cylinder. Record:
(i) the new volume change in the burette, i.e. the third burette readings, c cm3, minus the first
burette reading, a cm3 = (c - a) cm3 ;
(ii) the new reading in the measuring cylinder.
(d) Repeat the above procedure at least four more times, with a further 30 drops of water,
recording each time both the change in burette reading and the volume of water in the measuring
cylinder. Tabulate your results.

Discussion: The experiment compared the accuracy of a burette and measuring cylinder for
measuring liquid volumes. From the results obtained, the burette was more consistent because of
its precise graduations. Despite limitations like human error or improper equipment calibration,
this study that the burette is more accurate.
When measuring from both apparatus, it is show that throughout both, a varying number of
measurements and recording can be found

Reflection: Accurate volume measurements are essential for scientific research, therefore precise
measurements are required and that is why the burette is better suited for collecting and
measuring the drops of something as small as water, compared to a measuring cylinder.

Limitation:
 Human error in miscounting the number of drops.
 Variability in the size of water drops.
 Difficulty in accurately discerning the exact moment when a drop detaches from the burette.
 Inconsistencies in the method of drop delivery, such as differences in release speed or angle.

When deriving the volume of water from both apparatus, a number of factors that take place
throughout the experiment is human error through miscounting the number of drops and the
varying sizes of the drops of water

Precaution:
 Clamp the burette securely.
 Thoroughly rinse the burette and measuring cylinder with distilled water before use.
 When reading the meniscus from both apparatuses, ensure to read it from below at eye level.

 Handle the equipment with extreme care to prevent breakage.

 Properly read the drops to ensure accurate delivery.

To ensure precise and reliable results follow these precautions
.Clamp the burette securely
.Thoroughly rise the burette and measuring cylinder with distilled water
.When reading the meniscus from both apparatus make sure to read it from below at eye level.
.Handle the equipment with extreme care to prevent breakage
.Properly read the drops

Sources of error:
 Human error in reading the meniscus or drops of water.
 Variability in the size of water drops.
 Vibrations induced by shaking or movement of the table.
 Inaccuracies in the calibration of the measuring instruments.

 Gradual wear and tear of the equipment, leading to decreased precision over time.
A source of error that can affect this experiment is human error when reading the meniscus or
drops of water. Random errors like if sizes of the water drop, or vibrations brought on by the
table shaking.

Conclusion: Within the limits of experimental error. The experiment aimed to determine the
superior apparatus for measuring liquid volumes. Results have been proven to be consistent with
the burette being more accurate than measuring cylinder due to its precise graduations and
controlled delivery mechanism. It is shown that the burette has more accurate volume
measurements which is vital for reliable and useful data. By understanding this we can determine
which apparatus is better in certain situations.
