1. Newton’s rings experiment, the diameter of the 15th ring was found to be 0.59 cm and
that of the 5th ring is 0.336 cm. If the radius of curvature of the lens is 100 cm, find the
wavelength of the light.

2. A soap film of refractive index 1.33 and thickness 5000 Å is exposed to white light.
What wavelengths in the visible region are reflected?

3. In a double slit experiment, a light of 5460 Å is exposed to slits which are 0.1 mm apart.
The screen is placed 2 m away from the slits. What is the angular position of the 10th
maximum and 1st minimum?

4. Calculate the distance between the two successive position of s movable mirror of a
Michelson ‘s interferometer giving the best fringe in the case of a source which has
wavelengths 600nm and 595nm.

5. A transparent film of glass of refractive index 1.5 is introduced normally in the path of
one of the interfering beams of Michelson ‘s interferometer, which illuminated with of
light 450 nm. This causes 500 dark fringes to sweep across the field. Determine the
thickness of the film.

6. Two Fabry – Perot Interferometers have equal plate separation but the coefficients of
intensity reflection are 0.8& 0.7. Deduce the relative width of the maxima in the two
cases.

7. A newton ‘s rings are formed by reflected light from plan-convex lens and plane glass
plate with liquid between them, the diameter of the nth, ring is 2.05 mm and that of the
(n+10) the ring is 4.15mm. the calculate refractive index of liquid for having radius of
curvature 90 cm and light λs are one 589.3 nm, 450nm and 600nm.

8. Light containing two wave lengths λ1& λ2 falls on the convex lens, having curvature R,
resting on a glass plate. In the nth dark rings due to λ1 coincide with the (n+1) the dark

ring due to λ2, prove that radius of n the dark ring due to λ2 is (
λ1 λ2R
λ 1−λ 2
).
9. On placing a thin films of glass plate of μ= 1.5 and thickness 3.34*10 -3cm in the path of
one of the interfering beams of Michelson’s Interferometer, a certain number of fringes
passing across the field view. If λ=600nm, calculate the number of fringes passed across
the field view. giving the best fringes in case for 589nm &589.6nm.

10. In an experiment for determining the μ of air with Michelson’s Interferometer a shift
of 150 fringes is seen, when the all air was removed by from the tube. If λ=400nm in air
&length of tube 20cm, calculate the refractive index of air.

11. At a certain point on a screen the path difference for the two interfering rays is 1/8 th of
the wavelength. Fins the ratio of the intensity at this point to that at the centre of a
bright fringe.

12. A Young’s double slit arrangement produces interference fringes for Na light
( λ=589nm) that are 0.20cm apart. What is the angular fringe separation if the entire
arrange is immersed in water (μ=4/3).
13. Consider the situation as shown in fig. this shows analytically that fringes obtained on
the screen S will be circular. Find the radius of nth bright fringe.

14. A Young’s double slit arrangement produces interference fringes for light (λ=450nm)
that are 0.20 apart. What is the angular fringes separation if the entire arrangement is
immersed in oil (μ=1.43).

15. When a glass plate of thickness 0.02mm is placed in the path of one of interfering
beams, 20 fringes are shifted. If wavelength of light used is 600nm, find the refractive
index of glass.
16. A parallel beam of light 589nm isc incident on thin glass plate (μ=1.5) such that the
o
angle of refraction into the plate is 60 . Calculate the smallest thickness of glass plate
which will appear dark of reflection.
17. A soap film of refractive index 4/3 and thickness 1.5 micrometres is illuminated by
o
white light incident with angle 45 . the light refracted by it its examinate by
spectroscope, in which a dark band corresponding to a wavelength50micometers is
found. Calculate the order of interference band.

wavelength 589&589.6nm
