b. use the technical and operational

c. Appreciate the importance of clearly

- These objectives will serve as our guide as

we go through today’s discussion.

- The lesson is about words with the same

structure, meaning spelling but different
meaning. This will depend how it is used in Words are not as simple as they appear.
a sentence. Now, everybody read! Their meanings can be complex and
difficult as they operate differently in
various contexts.

- What do you think does it mean? (Answers vary.)

- Words might look easy to understand, but

their meanings can change depending on
how and where they are used.

- Now, let us discuss first what is “technical

definition”. Everybody, read! What is TECHNICAL definition?
- It refers to the definition of a word as
used in a particular field like Science,
Law, or Engineering.
- Meaning of the word is associated
with the field or area of study.
- Mostly refers to the aspect of
explaining or describing any
terminology.
- The definition of terms/words are
found in the dictionary.

EXAMPLE:
OPERATION – it is a procedure
followed in an instruction.
SURF - it is a sport, where a person
stands on a board and rides with the

based on how it is used in a specific field,
like Science, Law, or Engineering.
· The meaning of the word depends on the
subject or area of study.
· It is mainly used to describe or explain
special terms in that field.
· You can often find technical definitions in
dictionaries

- Now, let us know about “operational

definitions”. Everybody, read!
What is OPERATIONAL definition?
- it is a result of the process of
operationalization and it is used to
define something (term/object) in terms
of process.
- it is the process of defining a
word/term of how it is used in a
sentence, or using context clues.
- it is the application of the word/term.
These may include the various attempts
to define or explain a certain process
and its properties including but not
limited to the characterization of the
event itself.

- Defines a term based on how it is used in a

particular situation.

- Often used in research, experiments, and

real-world applications.

- Specifies how to measure or observe

something.

- Let us read some examples, class.

EXAMPLE:
COMPUTER - it is something used in
doing homework or browsing the
internet.
OPERATION - it is the procedure
given to be followed.
- At this point, let us know the difference
between technical definition and operational

the technical sense, while an
operational definition includes
information from the real world.

EXAMPLE: Automobile
TECHNICAL DEFINITION - is a
machine with four wheels and includes
details of the automobile that make it
function.
OPERATIONAL DEFINITION - is a
car or truck that gets you around from
place to place and carries cargo or
passengers, and makes it easier to live

in the city or provinces.
that technical definitions focus on the exact
characteristics of something. While
operational definitions focus on how
something is used or experienced in real
life. Do you understand? - Yes, ma’am.
GENERALIZATION
Why do we have to know these? (Answers vary.)
- We need to learn about the technical and
operational definitions, because for most
people, these can be a reason for
miscommunication or misunderstanding.
When people do not share meaning, they
may arrive at decisions that are not well-
informed. Also, when we need to explain
how something works, technical definition
will help because it offers us the details.
When we need just an idea, operational
definition is more helpful.
- Do you have questions and clarifications? - None, ma’am.
- If that so, then let’s now measure how
much you have learned.
D. APPLICATION
- Now that you were able to understand
what technical and operational definition is
all about. Why not apply all that you have
learned and understand? Do your best and
have fun with a little bit of challenge. I will
group the class into five. Let us do
counting. (Students do as told.)
- Go to your group mates. In 5, 4, 3, 2, 1,
