Objective
The objective of this lab is to do some networking commands to help us better understand networking
and, in its troubleshooting, as well as its administration.
Equipment and Component
Component Description Value Quantity

Conduct of Lab
1. Students are required to perform this experiment individually.
2. In case the lab experiment is not understood, the students are advised to seek help from the course
instructor, lab engineers, assigned teaching assistants (TA) and lab attendants.

Theory and Background

A subnetwork or subnet is a logical subdivision of an IP network. The practice of dividing a
network into two or more networks is called subnetting. Computers that belong to the same subnet
are addressed with an identical most-significant bit-group in their IP addresses. Use the concept of
wildcard mask for finding block size of subnet.

Note: Use proper naming convention to save your files. e.g roll number_lab#.docx

Lab Task
Task A: Research [Marks: 8]

1. Fill and understand the following table with missing information: [8]

Sr. IP address Subnet Mask

Total Total Total Host
No. Networks Network IP

Task B: Configuration of Sub Networks in Cisco Packet Tracer [Marks: 32]

a) Configuration of Sub Networks for IP address 200.1.2.0/27 [8]

1. Label your task using naming convention as: (e.g.,rollnum_200.1.2.0_27)

2. Make a topology of 1 switch and 2 pc for every subnetwork.
3. Assign and label IP addresses to respective sub network pc’s/hosts. e.g., for the
sub network,
200.1.2.0 – 200.1.2.32 (include Network ID and Broadcast ID)
200.1.2.1 – 200.1.2.31 (valid Host IP address range)
4. Test ping command for same sub network, and different sub network.
5. Write your observations.
6. Show working configuration to lab engineer to obtain credit.
7. Paste screenshot of the working configuration in the space below:
Observation:
Same subnet communication is successful with no packet loss, confirming
correct IP assignments. However, pinging across different subnets fails, as a
router is required for inter-subnet connectivity. Adding a router and configuring
default gateways will enable communication between subnets.

a) Configuration of Sub Networks for IP address 192.168.10.1/28 [8]

1. Label your task as: (e.g.,rollnum_192.168.10.1_28)

2. Make a topology of 1 switch and 2 pc for every subnetwork.
3. Assign and label IP addresses to respective sub network pc’s/hosts. e.g., for the
sub network
192.168.10.0 – 192.168.10.15 (include Network ID and Broadcast ID)
192.168.10.1 – 192.168.10.14 (valid Host IP address range)
4. Test ping command for same sub network, and different sub network.
5. Write your observations.
6. Show working configuration to lab engineer to obtain credit.
7. Paste screenshot of the working configuration in the space below:
Observation:
Same subnet communication is successful with no packet loss, confirming
correct IP configuration. However, communication between different subnets
fails since a router is required for inter-subnet connectivity. Adding a router and
configuring default gateways will enable cross-subnet communication.

c) Configuration of Sub Networks for IP address 68.0.0.0/12. [8]

1. Label your task as: (e.g.,rollnum_68.0.0.0_12)

2. Make a topology of 1 switch and 2 pc for every subnetwork.
3. Assign and label IP addresses to respective sub network pc’s/hosts.

However, communication between different subnets
fails without a router. Adding a router and configuring default gateways will
enable inter-subnet connectivity.
d) Configuration of Sub Networks for IP address 135.15.10.138/20. [8]

1. Label your task as: (e.g.,rollnum_135.15.10.138_20)

2. Make a topology of 1 switch and 2 pc for every subnetwork.
3. Assign and label IP addresses to respective sub network pc’s/hosts.
4. Test ping command for same sub network, and different sub network.
5. Write your observations.
6. Show working configuration to lab engineer to obtain credit.
7. Paste screenshot of the working configuration in the space below:
Observation:
Same subnet communication is successful with no packet loss, confirming
proper IP configuration. However, different subnets cannot communicate without
a router. Adding a router and configuring default gateways will enable inter-
subnet communication.
