In this lab report template, you will see the explanation in red, and example in green.
Delete them once you finished your own writing.

Title
Must include the dependent and independent variable, must be specific (not question form).
Eg: An investigation on how (independent variable) affect (dependent variable)

Research question: ____________________________________________________________

Write your research question here again.

Hypothesis: ____________________________________________________________
Write your hypothesis here again.

Results
C.i
Observation:

If dependent variable shows any qualitative changes, add descriptions of the change of the quality (color, smell,
etc)

Raw data and processed data

Minimum of 3 trials each. Aim for just one table.

Table 1. ____________________ The Effect of ____ on _______

(Independent (Dependent variable) Average

variable) (unit) (unit)
(unit) Trial 1 Trial 2 Trial 3

Write the formulas you used to calculate the data.

Graph
C.i
Attach your graph to the back of the lab report sheet
Create a graph that shows your independent and dependent variables. You can use Excel, Numbers, or different
websites that can create graphs for you:

Analysis and Conclusion

Patterns: Explain what your data using words like increase or decrease. Refer to specific data points
C.ii
(numbers) to support your reasoning, tell WHY your data is the way it is. Provide reasons supported by
scientific sources (with citations in Works Cited).

Paragraph 1: State the actual value or result and connect it to the scientific knowledge being discussed in class.
“My data and graph shows that when the (independent variable) increase/decrease...the (dependent variable)
will...This suggests that (give a scientific knowledge)...

*A direct relationship means the Independent and dependent variable both increase or decrease together.
*An indirect relationship means the Independent and dependent variable are opposite. As one increases, the other
decreases or vice versa.

Paragraph2: State another source that supports your reasons.

“Based on my research...” OR
“Another source that supports my claim is...”

Do not use “up”, “down”, “stay the same”, these are not scientific. Use scientific terms “increase”, “decrease”, or
“it is constant” instead.

Evaluating the Hypothesis: Discuss the validity of the prediction using your graph and data, stating if
C.iii
your hypothesis was supported or not.

Answer the research question. Confirm if your hypothesis is supported or not. If the hypothesis is not supported,
give a brief explanation why.
“I predicted that...My data supported my prediction and shows that.” OR
“I predicted that...My data did not support my prediction because...”
“Looking at the data in the table/graph, we see that …”
“The possible scientific reasoning for why the hypothesis is or is not supported is… “
“Another possible reason is…”

C.iv Evaluating the method: Discuss the reliability and validity of your method, state the significance of the
validity as low, medium, or high.

Strength of the experiment:

“The method I followed did allow / did not allow / partially allowed me to answer the research question. It is
because...”
“Some strengths in the method were...”

Limitation of the experiment:

Describe the factors that can affect your result but you cannot control it or the solution you have only lessens the
error in the result.
“Amount of sunlight affects the growth of plants. We cannot measure the amount of sunlight so the best way is to
put all plants in one area so they can all have equal amounts of sunlight.”
“ Some weaknesses in the method I was given were...”
“ Something I found difficult in carrying out the method was..”.
“If I wanted to test the same problem again, I would/ would not use this method because….”

Suggesting improvements: Suggest improvements or extensions according to the limitations of the

C.v
method.

Suggest other methods to improve the experiment or other variables that could be tested to enhance or further
extend what you have investigated.

Improvements:

Have minimum of 2 possible sources of error

Error How it affected the results Solution (how to improve)

Water was not measured correctly The concentration of the solution Make sure to put the graduated
with the graduated cylinder will be different than designed and cylinder on a flat surface before
affect the rate of reaction. reading the volume.

“The method I followed did allow/did not allow/ partially allowed me to answer my research question... If someone
will replicate this experiment, I suggest that they...”
“They can also use...as an independent variable, and measure ....to”
“I could improve the method by ....”
“ I would make these improvements because...”

Extensions:
“ This investigation has made me think of a new question, which is... “
“ I could test this by...”
“ I would like to find out more about ... because...”
