Grammar is the foundation of any language, and understanding it in the simplest way makes learning
English much easier. These notes have been prepared with great care, using very simple words, so that every
student, whether a beginner or advanced learner, can benefit from them. I have dedicated these notes to
my beloved late brother Shahid Idrees. May Allah (SWT) grant him the highest place in Jannah. I kindly
request every student who benefits from these notes to say a prayer for him. May he be blessed with eternal
peace, and may we all achieve success in this life and the Hereafter. May these notes help you in your studies
and guide you toward excellence in English. I pray that every student who reads them gains knowledge,
wisdom, and success in their exams and beyond.
Best Wishes

Clause:
A clause is a group of words that has both a subject and a verb. It can sometimes express a complete
thought (independent clause) or might need more information to make sense (dependent clause).
Independent Clause: A clause that can stand alone as a sentence.
o Example: She sings well. (Complete thought)
Dependent Clause: A clause that cannot stand alone and needs an independent clause to make
sense.
o Example: Because she sings well (Needs more info to complete the thought).
Phrase:
A phrase is a group of words that works together but doesn't have both a subject and a verb. It is
incomplete by itself and cannot stand as a sentence.
Example of Phrase: In the morning or on the table (These are groups of words but don't have both
a subject and a verb).
Key Difference:
Clause = Has both subject and verb (can be a complete thought).
Phrase = A group of words without both subject and verb (incomplete thought).
What is a Verb?
A verb is a word that shows action or state of being. It’s one of the most important parts of a sentence
because it tells us what the subject is doing or what condition the subject is in.
Types of Verbs:
1. Action Verbs: These verbs show what the subject is doing.
o Examples:
She runs (action of running)
They eat (action of eating)
2. Linking Verbs: These verbs connect the subject with more information about it (like describing the
subject). The most common linking verb is "to be" in its different forms (am, is, are, was, were, etc.).
o Examples:
He is happy (links subject "he" to "happy")
They are teachers (links "they" to "teachers")
3. Helping (Auxiliary) Verbs: These verbs help the main verb in a sentence by extending its meaning.
Common helping verbs include am, is, are, have, do, will, etc.
o Examples:
She is running (helping verb "is" helps the main verb "running")

3. Cause-Effect Relationships
Present Perfect and Past Perfect are used to show completion before another action.

Dear Students,
As you step forward on this journey of exams and challenges, remember that success is not just about marks,
it's about growth, effort, and perseverance. Each late-night study session, every moment of doubt, and all the
struggles you face today are shaping the strong, resilient person you are meant to become.
Believe in yourself, trust your hard work, and never let fear hold you back. No matter the outcome, know
that you have given your best, and that alone is a victory. May your dedication shine through, and may you
achieve everything you have worked so hard for.
Wishing you all the success in the world. May Allah bless you with clarity, confidence, and the best of
results. Keep faith in yourself—you are capable of achieving greatness!
Best of luck!
