CLASS TEST – II

B.E. 8TH SEMESTER CIVIL ENGINEERING

MARCH 2011
ANALYSIS OF FRAMED STRUCTURES
TIME: 2 Hours Max. Marks: 50

Note: Question No. 1 is compulsory. Attempt any four from the rest. Calculate maximum positive B.M. at the centre of span AB and

Q. 1. (a) What is a substitute frame? maximum negative B.M. at the centre of span BC. [10]

(b) What are the assumptions made in portal method and Q. 3. Analyse the building frame, subjected to horizontal forces, as

cantilever method? shown in figure.

(c) What is rotation contribution and rotation factor?

(d) Explain the concept of finite element method briefly and
outline the procedure.
(e) Define shape function.
Q. 2. Figure shows a substitute frame for a multistoreyed building.
The frames are spaced at 4 m c/c. Take the live load as 4000
N/m2, dead load as 3000 N/m2, 3250 N/m2 and 2750 N/m2 for Use portal method and calculate:
the panels AB, BC and CD respectively. The self weight of the (i) Horizontal shears in columns
beam may be taken as under: (ii) Moments at the ends of the columns
Beams of 7 m span : 5000 N/m (iii) Moment at the ends of the beams [10]
Beams of 5 m span : 3500 N/m (iv) Shear in beams
Beams of 3.5 m span : 2500 N/m (v) Axial force in columns.
The relative stiffness of the members are marked on the figure Q. 4. Analyse the building frame of Q. 3. completely for horizontal
itself: forces by Cantilever method. [10]
Q. 5. Assemble equations of equilibrium for the spring system shown
in figure by direct approach. Show that minimization of
potential energy also yields same result. [10]

Q. 6. Determine the displacements of nodes 1 and 2 in the spring

system shown in figure. Use minimum of potential energy
principle to assemble equations of equilibrium. [10]
