Problem #1 [35 pts]
Consider the following message signal 𝑚𝑚(𝑡𝑡)
𝑚𝑚(𝑡𝑡) = cos(2𝜋𝜋 × 100𝑡𝑡) + cos(2𝜋𝜋 × 200𝑡𝑡) + cos(2𝜋𝜋 × 400𝑡𝑡)
This signal is applied to a SSB modulator together with a carrier at 100 kHz, with only the upper sideband
retained. In the coherent detector used to recover 𝑚𝑚(𝑡𝑡), the local oscillator supplies a sinusoidal wave of
frequency 100.02 kHz.
i. Determine the frequency components of the detector output.
ii. Draw a block diagram of the transmitter (modulator).
iii. Can an envelope detector be used for detecting the transmitted signal? (yes/no), why?

Problem #2 [35 pts]

Design a block diagram of an Armstrong indirect FM modulator to generate an FM signal with a carrier
frequency of 96 MHz and ∆𝑓𝑓 = 20 kHz. A narrowband FM generator with 𝑓𝑓𝑐𝑐 = 200 kHz and adjustable
∆𝑓𝑓 in the range of 9 to 10 Hz is available. The stockroom also has an oscillator with adjustable
frequency in the range of 9 to 10 MHz. There are bandpass filters with any center frequency, and only
frequency doublers are available.

Problem # 3 [30 pts]

A carrier wave of frequency 90 MHz is frequency-modulated by a sinusoidal wave of amplitude 10 V and
frequency 50 kHz. The frequency sensitivity of the modulator is 20 kHz/V.
i. Determine the approximate bandwidth of the FM wave, using Carson’s rule.
ii. Determine the bandwidth obtained by transmitting only those side-frequencies with amplitudes that
exceed one percent of the unmodulated carrier amplitude. Use the attached Bessel Functions table for
this calculation.
