Animal Terminology

GENERAL TERMS

 Sire- Father
 Dam – Mother
 Calf – Young one of a cow below one year
 Heifer- Young female above 1 year yet not calved
 Sire Index- An index of genetic potential of the bull.
 Inter calving period- Interval between 2 successive calving

 Lactation period( Length)- Total no. days that cow is in


milk. It is 305 days from day of calving

 Dry period- No of days from the date of drying (stoppage


of milking) to next calving. It is usually 60 days.

 Peak yield- Highest daily yield in lactation period.

 Standard lactation milk yield- Milk yield of 305

* Cows – mature females that can reproduce


* Steers – castrated male cattle that cannot
reproduce
* Bullocks – young male bulls that are castrated
and used for ploughing & cart traction

 Fido -A casual synonym for dog as it is a common name for a male dog.
