Logarithms

The logarithm of a number is the power to which a base number must be raised to
produce that number.

Converting Logarithmic form to index form

The logarithmic form: 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝒙 = 𝒚

The index form: 𝒙 = 𝒃𝒚

Steps to convert:

1. Write the logarithmic equation in the form 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝒙 = 𝒚

2. Rewrite the equation in index form by raising the base (b) to the power of y: 𝒙 =
𝒃𝒚

Examples:

Convert to index form;

a) 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟐 𝒙 = 𝟑

Solution

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟐 𝒙 = 𝟑 in index form we raise the base (2) to the power of 3: 𝒙 = 𝟐𝟑

b) 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟒 = 𝟎. 𝟓

Solution
𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟒 = 𝟎. 𝟔

If the base is not stated, then the base becomes 10 by default.

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟒 = 𝟎. 𝟔 is the same as 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟏𝟎 𝟒 = 𝟎. 𝟔

In index form we raise the base (10) to the power of 0.5: 𝟒 = 𝟏𝟎𝟎.𝟔

Important points:

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝒙 = 𝒚 becomes 𝒙 = 𝒃𝒚 in index form.

The base of the logarithmic form becomes the base in the index form.

Laws of logarithms

Law 1
log 𝑏 𝑀 + log 𝑏 𝑁 = log 𝑏 𝑀𝑁

This law states that the logarithm of a sum is the same as the logarithm of the product
of the factors.

Example 7

Simplify 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟐 𝟑 + 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟐 𝟓

Solution:

Multiply the numbers 2 and 5 and keep the base (2)

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟐 𝟑 + 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟐 𝟓 = 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟐 (𝟑 × 𝟓)

= 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟐 𝟏𝟓

Example 8
Simplify log 2 + log 4 + log 3

Solution:

Multiply the numbers 2,4 and 3 and keep the base (10)

log 2 + log 4 + log 3 = log(2 × 4 × 3)

= 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟐𝟒

Law 2
𝑀
log 𝑏 𝑀 − log 𝑏 𝑁 = log 𝑏 𝑁

This law states that the logarithm of a difference is the same as the logarithm of the
division of the factors.

Example 9

Simplify log 5 36 − log 5 18

Solution:

Divide the numbers 36 and 18 and keep the base (5)

36
log 5 36 − log 5 18 = log 5 18

= 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟓 𝟐

Example 10

Simplify log 12 + log 4 − log 6

Solution:

log 12 + log 4 − log 6

= log(12 × 4) − log 6 [log 12 × log 4 = log(12 × 4) 𝑢𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑙𝑎𝑤 1]

= log 48 − log 6

48 48
= log {log 48 − log 6 = log using law 2 }
6 6

= 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟖

Law 3
𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝑴𝒙 = 𝒙 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝑴

This law states that the logarithm of a number raised to a power is equal to the product
of the power and the logarithm of the number.

Examples

1) log 23 = 3 × log 2 = 3 log 2 (the power 3, multiplies the logarithm)

2) log 4 52 = 2 × log 4 5 = 2 log 4 5 (the power 2, multiplies the logarithm)

3) log 3 104 = 4 × log 3 10 = 4 log 3 10 (the power 4, multiplies the logarithm)

8
This copy belongs to Name Nickname Surname
Online Lessons: 0774 031 978 Exam Cheat Code: Maths 3

The law also works in reverse:

1) 2log 5 3 = log 5 32 = log 5 (3 × 3) = log 5 9 (the number 2, becomes the power of 3)

2) 3 log 6 4 = log 6 43 = log 6 (4 × 4 × 4) = log 6 64 (the number 3, becomes the power of 4)

Special logarithms

1) log 𝑏 1 = 0 , the log of 1 regardless of the base is equal to 0 e.g. log 5 1 = 0

2) log 𝑏 𝑏 = 1 , if the number of the log is equal to the base, the logarithm becomes 1,
e.g. log 5 5 = 1

3) log 𝑏 0 𝑖𝑠 𝑢𝑛𝑑𝑒𝑓𝑖𝑛𝑒𝑑, undefined means it does not exist.

Example 11

Simplify 2 log10 8 − 2 log10 4

Solution:

𝟐 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟏𝟎 𝟖 − 𝟐 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟏𝟎 𝟒

Step 1: Remove the coefficients of the logs using law 3:

log10 82 − log10 42 (law 3, the coefficients become the powers)

= log10 (8 × 8) − log10 (4 × 4)

= log10 64 − log10 16

64
= log10 16 (law 2)

= 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟏𝟎 𝟒

Example 12

Simplify log 8 9 − 3 log 8 3 + 2 log 8 3

Solution:

9
This copy belongs to Name Nickname Surname
Online Lessons: 0774 031 978 Exam Cheat Code: Maths 3

Step 1: Remove the coefficients of the logs using law 3:

log 8 9 − 3 log 8 3 + 2 log 8 3

= log 8 9 − log 8 33 + log 8 32 (law 3, the coefficients become the powers)

= log 8 9 − log 8 (3 × 3 × 3) + log 8 (3 × 3)

= log 8 9 − log 8 27 + log 8 9

Step 2: Rearrange according to the signs, positive logs together:

log 8 9 − log 8 27 + log 8 9

= log 8 9 + log 8 9 − log 8 27

Step 3: Simplify using law 1 and law 2;

= log 8 9 + log 8 9 − log 8 27

= log 8 (9 × 9) − log 8 27 (using law 1)

= log 8 81 − log 8 27

81
= log 8 27 (using law 2)

= 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟖 𝟑

Properties of logarithms (laws in reverse)

𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝑴𝑵 = 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝑴 + 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝑵

Example: log 3 (4 × 5) = log 3 4 + log 3 5

𝑴
𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝑵 = 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝑴 − 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝒃 𝑵

5
Example: log 4 7 = log 4 5 − log 4 7

Example 19

Given that 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟓 𝟐 = 𝟎. 𝟒𝟑𝟏 and 𝐥𝐨𝐠 𝟓 𝟑 = 𝟎. 𝟔𝟖𝟑 to 3 decimal places.

Evaluate:

a) log 5 6 b) log 5 1.5 c) log 5 10 d) log 5 27 e) log 5 √3

Solutions:

a) We are given the logarithms of 2 and 3, so we need to express 6 as a product of 2

and 3.

log 5 6 = log 5 (2 × 3)

log 5 (2 × 3) = log 5 2 + log 5 3 (using log 𝑏 𝑀𝑁 = log 𝑏 𝑀 + log 𝑏 𝑁)

= 0.431 + 0.683 (since, log 5 2 = 0.431 and log 5 3 = 0.683)

= 𝟏. 𝟏𝟏𝟒

16
This copy belongs to Name Nickname Surname
Online Lessons: 0774 031 978 Exam Cheat Code: Maths 3

b) First convert the decimal to a fraction:

1 3
log 5 1.5 = log 5 1 2 = log 5 2 (then convert the mixed fraction to an improper fraction)

3 𝑀
log 5 2 = log 5 3 − log 5 2 (using log 𝑏 = log 𝑏 𝑀 − log 𝑏 𝑁)
𝑁

= 0.683 − 0.431 (since, log 5 2 = 0.431 and log 5 3 = 0.683)

= 𝟎. 𝟐𝟓𝟐

c) We cannot use 2 and 5 to get 10, but we realise that 10 is the product of 2 and 5. We
can evaluate log5 because our base is 5.

log 5 10 = log 5 (2 × 5)

log 5 (2 × 5) = log 5 2 + log 5 5 (using log 𝑏 𝑀𝑁 = log 𝑏 𝑀 + log 𝑏 𝑁)

= 0.431 + 1 (log 5 5 = 1 using log 𝑏 𝑏 = 1)

= 𝟏. 𝟒𝟑𝟏

d) First express 27 as a power of base 3, since we have log 3.

log 5 27 = log 5 33 (27 = 3 × 3 × 3 = 33 )

log 5 33 = 3 log 5 3 (using log 𝑏 𝑀 𝑥 = 𝑥 log 𝑏 𝑀)

= 3 × 0.683 (since log 5 3 = 0.683)

= 𝟐. 𝟎𝟒𝟗

e) First express the square root as a fractional index.

1
log 5 √3 = log 5 32 (using the fractional index law)
1
1
log 5 32 = 2 log 5 3 (using log 𝑏 𝑀 𝑥 = 𝑥 log 𝑏 𝑀)

1
= 2 × 0.683 (since log 5 3 = 0.683)

= 𝟎. 𝟑𝟒𝟏𝟓
