Parts of Computer Systems

▪ Hardware.
▪ Software.
▪ Data.
▪ User.

1
Hardware

▪ Components that are touchable or have some

physical existence .
▪ Input and Output devices
▪ Processor
▪ Memory
▪ Storage devices

2
3
Software

▪ Set of instructions that tell a system what to do.

▪ Application Software
▪ System Software

4
Application software

▪ Application software is a type of computer program that performs a

specific personal, educational, and business function. Each program
is designed to assist the user with a particular process

5
System software

▪ System software is a type of computer program that is designed to

run a computer's hardware and application programs
▪ System software is software designed to provide a platform for
other software

6
7
“Device Drivers”
System or Application Software?

8
Data

▪ The material provided to the device for processing

and produce a useful information is called “Data.”
▪ Basically the input part provides Data to the
system.
▪ It can be of any type: text, voice, pointer movement
etc.

9
Users

▪ The people who interact with the system are

“Users”.
▪ We usually instruct according to the requirement of
the user, so the users are the most important factor
in building a system.

10
User less Computers

▪ Can work autonomously when programmed,

installed and started up first.
▪ Controlled by operating system installed on chips
rather disk.
▪ Navigation systems.
▪ Security systems.
▪ Etc.

11
Processing Cycle

▪ Converts data into information by processing,

storing and displaying the result.
▪ Involves various computer components.
▪ Parts of information processing cycle:
▪ Input.
▪ Processing.
▪ Output. (Optional)
▪ Storage. (Optional)

14
Computers Categorization

▪ Number of people.
▪ Speed.
▪ Price.
▪ Types of hardware.
▪ Etc.

15
Computers for Individual Users

▪ Operated by a single user at a time.

▪ Also called Personal Computers (PCs) or
microcomputers.
