What is a Staircase ?

A staircase is a set of steps designed to provide vertical


movement between different levels of a building or structure.

Horizontal Portion : Tread


Vertical Rise : Riser
Riser Height : 150mm to 200mm
Tread Depth : 250mm to 300mm
Type of Staircase

A staircase is a set of steps designed to provide vertical


movement between different levels of a building or structure.
Requirements to Design a Staircase

1. The building regulation require that all staircase be guarded on each side by a wall or
balustrade extending atleast 840mm (2.75 foot).

2. The building regulation limits the number of riser in any one flight to 16 and minimum of 3.

3. The angle between the pitch line and floor not to exceed 42 degree.

4. Landing is a Platform between two flights provided to serve rest and to make effective provision
for turning a staircase.

5. Good light and ventilation should be available.


Components of Staircase

Bluster – vertical member which is fixed
between stairway and horizontal to provide
to support the handrail.
Balustrade – the combined framework of
bluster and handrail.
String – the inclined manner of stairs which
supports the end of steps.
Flight – unbroken series of steps between
the landing.
Handrail – inclined rail over the string.
Generally, it is molded.
Nosing – projection parts of tread behind
the face of the riser.
Landing – horizontal platform between two
flights of stairs.

Headroom : height measured from the line
of nosing to the lower outer edge apron.

connects to treads.
Run – length of stairs in a horizontal plane
which includes the length of landing.
Scotia – an additional finish provided to
noising to improve the elevation.

• Thickness of tread should not be less than 32mm.

• Riser is usually at 25mm
