Hypothesis Testing Problems

The document presents a series of hypothesis testing problems involving various claims about means, standard deviations, and sample sizes across different contexts, such as student expenses, employee benefits, and health metrics. Each problem specifies a significance level and requires testing whether the sample mean significantly differs from a known population mean. The problems assume normality of the variables and involve calculations to validate or refute the claims made.

Hypothesis Testing Problems

PROBLEM 1
On a previous study conducted by Grade 11 students,
the monthly expense for cell phone loads of high school
students in Polangui is Php 215 with a standard deviation of
Php 30. A group of students claims that this amount has
increased. A sample of 100 students were randomly selected
and it was found out the average monthly expense for
cellphone load is Php 250. Use 5% level of significance to test
the claim. Assume that the variable is normally distributed.
PROBLEM 2
Coca Cola Corporation gives an average monthly
benefit of Php 6 000 to their employees during the
outbreak of COVID in 2019. To see if the value changed
over the years, a random sample of 40 employees were
selected and it was found out that the average monthly
benefit received is Php 5 875 with a standard deviation
of Php 450. Test the claim at 𝛼 = 0.04.
PROBLEM 3
A seller says that her perfume has a mean organic
content of 90 ml per bottle. A rival seller asked 27 users
of that perfume and found out that it has a mean
organic content of 88.5 ml with a standard deviation of 3
ml. Is it safe to say that the mean organic content is
really lower than expected? Test the claim using a 10%
level of significance. Assume that the variable is
normally distributed.
PROBLEM 4
A rural health unit conducted a survey on the height of
males aged 16 to 24 years old. It was found out that the
mean height was 70 inches. Test the hypothesis that
the mean height of the males aged 16 to 24 is greater
than 70 inches if a random sample of 45 males are
selected with a mean height of 75 inches and a
standard deviation of 2 inches. Use 5% level of
significance.
PROBLEM 5
The DSWD found out that the average number of
times a family went to buy necessities in a week is 5
times. In a new survey, a random sample of 25 families
were asked and found out a mean of 4 times a week
with a standard deviation of 2 times. Use a 10% level of
significance to test that the population mean is less than
5 times. Assume normality.
PROBLEM 6
A certain group of Senior Citizens received relief
goods with a mean amount of Php 500 per week and a
standard deviation of Php 50. A random sample of 75
recipients were surveyed and found out that the mean
amount of relief goods they received in a week is Php
600. Test the claim that the mean amount is not Php
500 at 1% level of significance. The variable is
assumed to be normally distributed.
PROBLEM 7 CLT

TV 5 claims that their employees had a mean

monthly salary of Php 12 500. A reporter wants to
verify if it is true or not by asking a 40 employees.
The result showed that the employees have an
average monthly salary of Php 10 750 with a
standard deviation of Php 1 000. Test the claim
using 10% level of significance.
PROBLEM 8
A company claims that their COVID19 vaccine has an
efficiency rate of 95. A group of scientists wanted to
verify this claim. They tested 25 animals infected with
COVID through clinical trials and found out that the
average efficiency rate of the said vaccine is 90 with a
standard deviation of a rate of 4. Test the claim using
a 5% level of significance and assume that the
variable is normally distributed.
PROBLEM 9
A study was conducted to determine the marrying
age of teachers. It was found out that the mean
marrying age is 30 years old with a standard deviation
of 1.5 years. A new survey to a sample of 95 teachers
was done and it revealed that the mean marrying age
was 33 years old. Use a 10% level of significance to
test if the mean marrying age of teachers is higher
than 30 years old. Assume normality of variable.
PROBLEM 9
A health specialist wants to determine the number of
hours a person exercises in a day during the
quarantine period. She found out that the mean
number of hours a person exercises in a day is 90
minutes. A random sample of 50 persons were
surveyed and found out that their average is 70
minutes with a standard deviation of 10 minutes. Test
the claim that the average exercise hours in a day is
not 90 minutes at 𝛼 = 0.04.
PROBLEM 10
A printer manufacturing company found out that its new
ink efficient printer can print an average of 1650 pages of
word document with a standard deviation of 75 pages. A rival
company claims that the printers are less efficient than what
they advertise. A total of 33 printers were tested and it was
found out that the average number of word document pages it
can print is 1423 pages. Test the claim using a 5% level of
significance. Assume that the variable is normally distributed.
PROBLEM 11
A test on car braking reaction times for men
between 18 to 30 years old have produced a mean of
0.603 seconds with a standard deviation of 0.098
seconds. When 40 randomly selected 18 to 30 years
old male drivers from a driving school were tested for
their reaction times, a mean of 0.550 seconds came
out. At 𝛼 = 0.10, test the claim of the driving
instructor that his graduates had faster reaction times.
Assume that the variable is normally distributed.
PROBLEM 12
Blood glucose levels for obese teenagers have a
mean of 120. A researcher claims that a diet high in
raw cornstarch will have an effect on the blood
glucose levels of the teenagers. A sample of 20
patients who have tried raw cornstarch diet has a
mean glucose level of 130 with a standard deviation of
38. Assuming that the variable is normally distributed,
test the hypothesis using 2.5% level of significance.
PROBLEM 13
According to the World Health Organization’s statistics
published in 2018, the lifespan of a person in the Philippines
is 67 years old. A random sample of 27 obituary notices in
the Philippine Daily Inquirer has an average of 60 years old
with a standard deviation of 6 years. If the lifespan in the
Philippines is normally distributed, does this information
indicate that the population mean lifespan of Filipinos is less
than 67 years? Test this hypothesis using a 1% level of
significance.
PROBLEM 14
A study conducted nationwide says that the
average rating in Statistics and Probability of Grade 11
students is 87. A survey to 500 randomly selected
students from Albay revealed that the average their
average rating in Statistics is 89 with a standard
deviation of 0.5. Can we conclude that the students in
Albay performed better in Statistics? Test the claim
using a 10% level of significance.
PROBLEM 15
A study revealed that the average monthly salary of a
private school teacher in the Philippines is Php 27 000 with a
standard deviation of Php 2 500. A sample of 35 private
school teachers were surveyed and it was found out that their
mean monthly salary is Php 28 600. Can it be concluded that
the average monthly salary is actually higher than previously
reported? At 𝛼 = 0.05, test the claim. Assume normality of
the variable.
