Abstract
iii
The Umbrarack-O-Bottle project at Burauen Comprehensive National High
School addresses both plastic waste management and the need for a proper
umbrella storage solution. It is made from eco-bricks and Mountain Dew plastic
bottles, turning discarded materials into a functional and eco-friendly umbrella
rack. The project aims to reduce plastic waste in the school, promote recycling, and
provide a designated place for wet umbrellas to prevent water from creating
slippery floors. The process involves measuring, cutting, and assembling the
materials to ensure the rack is strong, stable, and useful for students and staff.
Results show that the project helps lessen plastic waste accumulation while
also encouraging environmental awareness and responsibility within the school
community. By repurposing plastic materials, the Umbrarack-O-Bottle
demonstrates how upcycling can create practical and sustainable solutions. This
initiative highlights the importance of finding new ways to reuse waste and serves
as an example of how schools can take part in reducing environmental problems
through simple yet impactful projects.

1. Mismanagement of Eco-Bricks
Eco-bricks, or plastic bottles filled with compacted plastic waste, are often touted as a
sustainable solution to plastic pollution, their implementation and management are facing
growing criticism and concerns. This literature review explores the potential pitfalls and
mismanagement issues associated with eco-bricks, highlighting the need for a more nuanced and
critical approach to their use. (Wardani, Farida & Khotimah, et. al 2021).
SUMMARY OF LITERATURES
3
Mismanagement of eco-bricks raises concerns about their effectiveness as a sustainable
solution (Wardani et al., 2021). Improper disposal of plastic bottles contributes to environmental
and health hazards, highlighting the need for better waste management practices (Geetha &
Rajalakshmi, 2020). Improper plastic waste disposal leads to clogged drainage systems and water
contamination, exacerbating environmental issues (Landon-Lane et al., 2018). Innovative
recycling approaches, such as crafting umbrella stands from recycled plastics, offer functional
and eco-friendly solutions (ETSY.com). Community engagement in recycling efforts, through
education and distribution of recycling bins, has been shown to increase participation in
sustainable waste management (Halderman & Turner, 2020). These studies emphasize the need
for improved waste disposal methods, community involvement, and innovative recycling
strategies to mitigate plastic pollution and promote sustainability.

BEFORE AFTER
Structurally, the Umbrarack-O-Bottle was built using eco-bricks, PVC pipes, and
galvanized iron wires, ensuring durability and stability for long-term use. Additionally, the
project raised environmental awareness by educating students and staff on proper waste
management practices. Informational materials displayed on the rack further reinforced
responsible recycling behaviors. The initiative also fostered community engagement,
encouraging students and faculty to participate in plastic waste collection and upcycling efforts,
thus promoting a culture of environmental responsibility within the school.
Despite its success, the project encountered some challenges, including material sourcing,
precise assembly, and securing stronger adhesives for enhanced durability. Future improvements
could involve refining the rack’s design, optimizing material selection, and expanding
educational outreach to increase community participation. Overall, the Umbrarack-O-Bottle
effectively addressed the school’s environmental concerns, offering a practical and sustainable
solution while fostering awareness and responsibility. Moving forward, further refinements and
broader engagement efforts could enhance its long-term impact.
CHAPTER 4
ADVOCACY
9
The Umbrarack-O-Bottle's advocacy is presented in this chapter, along with how it can
help reduce the amount of plastic trash generated and enhance umbrella storage options in
educational settings. The researchers identified two main problems: the inappropriate disposal of
plastic bottles, especially 290ml Mountain Dew and 1.5L Coca-Cola bottles, and the wrong
storage of wet umbrellas, which results in slippery surfaces and congested halls. This concept
improves school safety and organization while promoting sustainability by turning plastic
garbage into a useful umbrella rack.
In addition to its environmental advantages, the Umbrarack-O-Bottle solves a significant
school safety issue. Especially during the rainy season, wet umbrellas left unattended in hallways
raise the danger of accidents and create messy environments. Because there isn't a specific place
to store umbrellas, teachers and students frequently scatter them around, which might cause
accidents and slick flooring. This initiative contributes to the creation of a neater, safer, and more
orderly learning environment by offering a structured and easily accessible storage area.
Umbrellas are kept properly stored thanks to the rack's positioning at classroom doorways and
corridor corners, which reduces risks and clutter.
Umbrarack-O-Bottle is a teaching tool for pupils as well as a safety and sustainability
advocate. Students learn more about recycling, trash management, and the value of repurposing
materials by actively participating in its development. They gain a sense of accountability and
ownership for environmental projects by actively taking part in the rack's construction and
installation. This project encourages students to think critically about how they can contribute to
sustainability beyond the classroom and encourages an eco-conscious culture inside the school.
Additionally, the Umbrarack-O-Bottle's success could serve as an inspiration for more
sustainability initiatives within the school community. The project establishes a standard for
other creative recycling initiatives by showing that plastic trash may be transformed into
something durable and beneficial. Additionally, it promotes conversations about cutting waste,
raising recycling rates, and incorporating eco-friendly procedures into other facets of school life.
This little but significant project could lead to a cascade of beneficial environmental changes,
highlighting the significance of group efforts in achieving sustainability.
The Umbrarack-O-Bottle is much more than simply an umbrella rack; it is a
representation of creativity, environmental consciousness, and student-led change. The study
shows how straightforward yet efficient solutions can result in notable gains in sustainability and
day-to-day school life by addressing the dual problems of plastic waste and school safety. The
goal of this project is to encourage a change toward a safer, greener, and more ecologically
conscious school environment, opening the door for more initiatives that turn trash into useful
resources.
CHAPTER 5

SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS
The researcher study found that plastic bottle works as great than other materials for the
base of the Umbrarack-O-Bottle in terms of durability and sturdiness. It would produce a
sustainable yield if built properly. In this research, the development of Umbrarack-O-Bottle
posed a few minor challenges for the researchers. Although certain materials may perform
comparably to the materials currently at hand, the missing material could potentially prove to be
more effective than the existing options. This research suggests that to establish and cultivate a
sustainable and resilient project, further hands-on assessment and evaluation need to be
implemented in the development of the Umbrarack-O-Bottle.
This research indicates that creating a umbrella rack using plastic bottles is an effective
and valuable approach to minimizing plastic waste around the school, in households, and
throughout the community. Additionally, it serves as a method for students or individuals
interested in hands-on projects to enhance their practical analytical skills. This research
highlighted that employing plastic bottles as the main element of Umbrarack-O-Bottle greatly
enhanced the output's strength and durability.
5.2 CONCLUSIONS
The Umbrarack-O-Bottle project effectively addresses the environmental challenge of waste
accumulation at Burauen Comprehensive National High School by providing a practical and
umbrella management solution. This project highlights the value of innovation and community
involvement in tackling complex environmental challenges, showcasing how collaboration can
drive sustainability. The newly developed system seeks to address issues related to umbrella
management, such as wet umbrellas creating clutter and slippery floors. Without an effective
storage solution, wet umbrellas contribute to disorganized and messy spaces. The success of the
Umbrarack-O-Bottle project demonstrates the potential of up-cycling and repurposing materials
to develop eco-friendly solutions.
