1. About the MEXT scholarship program

Q1 What are the eligibility requirements to apply for the program?

Our MEXT scholarship program is only for graduate school students and you can
participate as our regular student after graduate your home university. The
following are the conditions of eligibility.
1) Nationality other than Japan.
2) Under 35 years of age (Birth date after April 2, 1987)
3) Academic background qualified to enter each graduate school
4) MEXT GPA score of 2.30 or higher

Q2 What kind of language skill do I need to join the program?

Required language levels are different between Special Program and General
Program.
1) Special Program (ENPHAS)
“English CEFR level of B2 or higher”
2) General Program
“Japanese JLPT level of N2 or higher” or “English CEFR level of B2 or higher”.
Required language, Japanese or English, should be decided by the supervisor.

Q3 Which graduate schools are covered by MEXT scholarship program?

1) Special Program (ENPHAS)
Medical Science / Pharmaceutical Science / Science
2) General Program
All the graduate schools

Q4 To apply Special Program (ENPHAS), do I need to be the graduate of science


field?
A4 Special Program is established jointly by Graduate School of Medical
Sciences, Pharmaceutical Sciences and Science. It is desirable for the
participants to have the academic backgrounds of the related fields to follow the

lectures in these graduate schools.

Q5 How can I find a potential supervisor and contact him/her?

1) Check each Graduate School’s website and confirm the research field of the
potential supervisor. Many professors list their contact address on the
website.

2) Contact the supervisor and tell him/her about your intention to study at NCU.
Discuss your research field and study topic by e-mail or other remote
communication method.
3) Confirm whether the supervisor is ready to accept and recommend you as a
MEXT scholarship student.

Q6 Can I contact more than one supervisor for my application?

You cannot contact more than one potential supervisor at the same time. You can

contact another supervisor after canceling contact with the first. The cancelation
should be made with the consent of the relevant supervisor. The deadline must
be met.

Q7 Is there a possibility that the program will be suspended next year due to
COVID-19?

Lar year, we started the program on October, but the MEXT scholarship students
could not come to Japan at the beginning due to travel restrictions. We have
developed a combination of online and on-campus lectures to deal with the
situation. By the special immigration arrangements supported by MEXT, all the
participants could join us on campus by December and the program has started
without suspension. We expect the same scenario in 2022 even if COVID-19
situation continues.

Q8 Can I join NCU on my own budget if I am not qualified as a MEXT scholarship


student?

Yes, you can join NCU as a self-sponsored student after passing our entrance
examination.

Q9 How can I calculate my MEXT GPA?

MEXT GPAs are scored on a 4-tiered system from 0 to 3. A score of 0 means Fail,
1 is Fair, 2 is Good, and 3 is Excellent. If the GPA of your grade transcript is scaled
on a 5-tiered or 100-point grading system, convert them into a MEXT GPA using
this formula. Please refer to the following chart.

2. About students exchange program

Q10 What are the eligibility requirements to apply for the program?

Our student exchange program opens for all the faculties, schools and graduate
schools. You can participate the classes of NCU as a special audit student up
to one year while maintaining student status in your home university. The
following are the conditions of eligibility.
1) You should the regular student of your home university which has the “Student
Exchange Agreement” with NCU.
2) You need to fulfill the language level, either Japanese or English, which is
required to follow the classes conducted in NCU. Usually your JLPT level
needs to be N3 or above to join the lectures of undergraduate schools.

Q11 How can I apply to student exchange program?

NCU announces the recruitment of exchange students for each semester to the
international offices of the partner universities which has “Student Exchange
Agreement” with NCU. The timing of the announcement is April for the second
semester and October for the following year’s first semester. Please get the
guideline and application sheet from your international office and send your
information in the application sheets to us through your international office by the
dead line date.

Q12 Do you have exchange international students every year?

We usually accept around 20 exchange students every year. The international
students can choose either 1st or 2nd semester to start the program.

Q13 Is the exchange program applicable to all school year students?

It depends on the “Student Exchange Agreement” between NCU and your home
university. Please check it with your international office.

Q14 Is there any scholarship available in the exchange program.

The scholarship of JASSO, Japan Student Service Organization, is available.
You need to fill the qualification and pass our interview to become eligible to the
scholarship before coming to Japan. This may terminate due to the budget
scale of JASSO.

General
Q15 After paying the tuition for 1st and 2nd semester, is there any scholarship
available for my 3rd semester onward?

There are several private funded scholarships available for the international
regular students. To get the scholarship, you have to fill the qualifications and
pass the examination. Please refer the below website for the list of the

Q16 I am a second year philosophy students of the faculty. Does NCU offer
philosophy program?

NCU does not have philosophy program but there are professors whose fields
are related to philosophy. Please check the professors list of Graduate School
of Humanities and Social Sciences and researcher database.

Q17 Can I apply to any other course offered by NCU even though it is not relevant
to my current major?

Yes, you can apply to other course after passing our interview and examination.

Q18 Will there be a program for undergraduate students in 2022?

We do not and have MEXT scholarship program for undergraduate students.
We have and will have exchange program for undergraduate students.

Q19 Is it required to be fully vaccinated before going to Japan?

Currently it is not required. Only PCR test is mandatory. Please refer the

Q20 Is the Japanese Language Program at NCU also offered for undergraduate
students?

Yes, there are the following intermediate level programs with credits for
undergraduate students.

Q22 I have studied Japanese for two years and I am an undergraduate creative
writing student. Is it possible to apply for the Japanese Language Program or take
up Japanese culture under School of Humanities and Social Sciences?

It depends on your level of Japanese language. If your JLPT level is N2 or
higher, you can take up Japanese culture class along with Japanese language
program.

Q23 Are there available scholarship for ASEAN students?


A23 MEXT and JASSO scholarship is applicable for ASEAN students. In
addition to that, some private funded scholarships are available to the
international regular students which can be applied after coming to Japan.
