CH 7

The document discusses weather and climate, defining weather as daily atmospheric conditions and climate as the average weather over a long period. It outlines factors that determine climate and describes various animal adaptations to their environments, including polar bears, penguins, camels, elephants, big cats, red-eyed frogs, toucans, and monkeys. Additionally, it explains the concept of migration as seasonal movement of animals to cope with changing conditions.

CHAPTER-7

WEATHER, CLIMATE AND ADAPTATIONS

OF ANIMALS TO CLIMATE

Weather:- The atmospheric conditions on a

particular day, at a place with respect to the
temperature, humidity, rainfall, speed and
direction of wind etc is called the weather at that
place on that day. All the changes in the weather
are caused by the sun.
Elements of the weather:- The different elements
of the weather are:-
1.Maximum and minimum
temperature 2.Humidity
3. Rain and snow
4.Wind
Climate:- The average weather pattern at a place
taken over a long period of time (say 25 years) is
called the climate of that place.
Factors determining climate:- The climate of a
place is determined mainly by the following
factors:-
1.Distance from the equator
2.Altitude
3. Distance from the sea
4.Winds
5.Human activities
Adaptations:- The favourable characteristics which
enables the living organisms to survive and breed
in their surroundings is called adaptations.
Adaptations in polar bear (polar region animal) :-
1.Polar bears have two thick layers of fur on
their bodies.
2.They have a thick layer of fat called blubber
under their skin that keeps the body warm in
extremely cold climate.
3.They have white- coloured fur, so they are not
easily visible in the snow. It protects them
from predators and also helps them in catching
prey.
4.They have a strong sense of smell so that they
can locate and catch their prey.
Adaptations in Penguins (Polar region animal) :-
1.Penguins are white in colour with black
coloured feathers on their back.
2.They have thick skin and a layer of fat called
blubber below their skin which keeps them
warm in extreme cold climate.
3.They huddle together in groups to keep
themselves warm.
4.They are also excellent swimmers. They have
streamlined bodies, flippers like wings and
webbed feet which help them swim.
Adaptations in Camel ( Desert animal) :-
1.It has a hump where fat is stored. The camel
utilises this fat as food in case of scarcity of
food.
2.A large amount of water gets stored in its
stomach.
3.It sweats very little and also excretes very
little water in urine. This helps to conserve
water.
4.Camel has large sole which helps to walk on
sand, long legs keeps the body away from
the heat of sand and long eyelashes to
protect the eyes from sand.
Adaptations in Elephants (Tropical rainforest
animal) :-
1.The trunk of an elephant is basically an
elongated nose. The trunk helps the
elephants in many ways:-
a.It has a strong sense of smell because
it uses its trunk as a nose.
b.It uses its trunk to pick up food and
for drinking water.
2.Elephants has big and long pointed teeth
called tusks. Tusks are the modified teeth
of the elephants.
3.The elephant has large ears that’s why
they can hear even the lowest sounds
made by its predators.
Adaptations in Big cats ( Tropical rainforest
animal) :- The wild animals such as lions, tigers
and Leopards are called big cats.
1.They have a highly developed sense of
smell which helps them to locate their
prey.
2.The big cats have sharp eyesight to locate
their prey from a distance.
3.They can run very fast which helps them to
catch their prey.
4.They have long, strong and sharp claws in
their front legs to catch their prey.
Adaptations in Red – eyed frog:- The red eyed
frog has big and bulging bright red eyes so, it
is called red eyed frog. It has sticky pads on
its feet which help it climb easily on the tree
trunk on which it lives.
Adaptations in Toucan:- Toucan has long
colourful beak. The long beak helps a toucan
to reach the branches which are too weak to
support its weight.
Adaptations in Lion- tailed macaque:- The
lion tailed Macaque has silver white mane.
Lion tailed macaque is also known as *Beard
ape* . The tail is medium and has a black tuft
at the end similar to a lion’s tail.
Adaptations in Monkeys:-
1.They have long tails for grasping
branches.
2.Their hands and feet are such that they can
easily hold on to the branches of the trees.
3.They have opposable thumbs which allow
them to grasp small things.
Migration:- Seasonal movement of birds and
other animals in large numbers from one
place to another to overcome unfavourable
conditions and returning back to original
habitat when conditions become favourable
is called migration . Examples:- siberian
crane ,arctic tern.
