CHAPTER 3: THE AXIALLY LOADER BAR

Problem 1: The rigid bar AD is supported by the pin-connected rod BC that is made from
steel with modulus elasticity E = 2.104 kN/cm2 and has a cross-sectional area F, allowable
stress [σ] = 14 kN/cm2. (Figure 1)
1. Determine the reaction in rod BC.
2. Determine the required [F]
3. Determine the vertical displacement of endpoint D.

Problem 2: Two steel AB, AC have area of cross section of F and 2F, respectively. The
allowable tensile stress for the steel is 150MPa and modulus elasticity E = 2.104 kN/cm2.
(Figure 2) If P = 15kN, l = 1m:

2. Determine the required [F]
3. Determine the horizontal displacement of point A.

Problem 3: The rigid bar AC is supported by two columns at A and C which are made from
steel with modulus elasticity E = 2,1.104 kN/cm2 and have the same square cross-sectional
bxb, the allowable stress [σ] = 12 kN/cm2. (Figure 3)
1. Determine the reactions in columns at A and C.
2. Determine the required [b]
3. Determine the vertical displacement of midpoint of rigid bar AC.

Problem 4: The column AC uses to support the force system, has modulus elasticity E =
1,9.104 kN/cm2. Knowing that the parts AB, BC have qAB = 0,005625 kN/cm, qBC = 0,015625
kN/cm and FAB = 2cm2, FBC = 5cm2, respectively. [σ] = 14 kN/cm2 (Figure 4)
1. Draw the normal force diagram.
2. Check the durable condition for the column.
3. Determine the vertical displacement of free-point A.

Problem 5: The rigid beam is supported by the two suspender bars. Bar AB is made of
aluminum and bar EF is made of steel. If each bar has a cross-sectional area of 450 mm2,
determine the maximum value of P if the allowable stress is (σallow)st = 200 MPa for the steel
and (σallow)al = 150 MPa for the aluminum. Est = 200 GPa, Eal = 70 GPa. Determine the
displacement at point D. (Figure 5)
Problem 6: The rigid beam AB is pinned at pin A and supported by two bars DE, BC. Both
of bars are made of the same material E = 2.104kN/cm2, the allowable stress [σ] = 24 kN/cm2.
1. Determine the reactions in each bars. (Figure 6)
