1.

Determine the load which will dissipate maximum power when connected to the output
terminals and the maximum power.
Answers: Z= (3.2 +4.4j ) Ω, 𝑽𝒕𝒉= 22.36 <26.6 V, 𝑰𝒕𝒉 = 3.49 <26.6 A, P= 38.97 W

2. Find the load impedance ZL for the networks below for maximum power to be dissipated
and find the maximum power to the load.:

a)

b)

Answers:
a) ZL = 8.32 Ω ∠3.18° = 8.31 Ω − j0.46 Ω, ETH=199.45 V ∠−56.31° , P= 1198.2 W
b) ZL =5.71 Ω ∠64.30° = 2.48 Ω + j5.15 Ω, VZ3 = 168.97 <112.53 V, ETH = ( 200 V ∠90° −
168.97 V ∠112.53° ) = 78.24 V ∠34.16°, P= 618.33 W

Chapter 3
1. A 415 V, 50 Hz, 3-phase supply is connected to a star-connected balanced load. Each phase
of the load consists of a resistance of 25 Ω and inductance 0.1 H, connected in series.
Calculate (a) phase voltage, (b) the line current drawn from the supply, and (c) the power
dissipated.

Answers: V ph= 240 V, I ph= 5.98 A, P= 2.68 kW

2. A balanced load of phase impedance 100 Ω and power factor 0.8 is connected (a) in star,
and (b) in delta, to a 400 V, 3-phase supply. Calculate the power dissipation in each case.

Answers : a) P=1.28 kW. b) P= 3.84 kW

3. A balanced star-connected load is fed from a 400 V, 50 Hz, three-phase supply. The
resistance in each phase of the load is 10 Ω and the load draws a total power of 15 kW.
Calculate (a) the line current drawn, (b) the load power factor, and (c) the load inductance.

4. The phase sequence of the Y-connected generator in Figure below is ABC.

a. Find the phase angles 𝜃2 and 𝜃3 . ( 𝜽𝟐 = −𝟏𝟐𝟎° , 𝜽𝟑 = +𝟏𝟐𝟎° 𝒐𝒓 − 𝟐𝟒𝟎° )

b. Find the magnitude of the line voltages. (V line= 208 V, )
c. Find the line currents. (Ian= 24 <53.13° A, Ibn = 24 <173.13° A, Icn = 24 < 66.87° A) I N= I L
d. Verify that, since the load is balanced, IN=0.

recorded readings were P2 =3.2 kW and P1= 5 kW respectively. Determine the load power and
power factor. Angle= 20.82° and pf =0.94

9. Two wattmeters indicate 9 kW and 2.6 kW, respectively, when connected to measure the input
power to a three-phase balanced load. The second meter indicates a reverse 2.6 kW reading.
Estimate the total input power and the load power factor. Find Answers
