Excel Practice Activity
Excel Practice Activity
INSTRUCTIONS
In this practice activity you will watch a video that demonstrates how to use the Excel data
summarization and visualization tools. You will then have an opportunity to practice using these
features with a data set.
1. Watch the videos Summarize Categorical Data opens in new window (36:52)
and Summarize Numerical Data opens in new window (24:17)
2. Open the Data Summary and Visualization Examples document and reference it as you
watch the video.
3. Practice how to create tables and charts for categorical and quantitative data in Excel.
Note that the "Salary" variable in the data given in the Excel file is a continuous
numerical variable. If you have discrete numerical variable, then you do not need to
create bins for the frequency distribution table.
4. The topic that is not shown in the video is how to create time series graphs. It is a simple
process. You will have to select the columns with your data that you want to plot (the
time variable values and one or more numerical variable values), go to the "Insert" tab at
the top of your sheet and select line chart. Once you create a chart, make sure you add the
necessary titles, and look for patterns (increasing, decreasing, fluctuating over time)
revealed in the graph.

Practice Activity: Descriptive Statistics
INSTRUCTIONS
A common data analysis tool that you’ll use in Excel is the one for calculating descriptive
statistics. In this practice activity, you will see how to calculate the descriptive statistics
measures. Using two sets of data in an Excel workbook, you will practice calculating descriptive
statistics.
1. Watch the video Descriptive Statistics in Excel opens in new window(36:13)
2. Open the Descriptive Statistics Examples document and reference it as you watch the
video.
3. Practice how to to use the different Excel functions to compute descriptive statistics and
interpret the values.

Practice Activity: Pivot Tables
INSTRUCTIONS
The video in this practice activity demonstrates how to create pivot tables in Excel. You will
learn how to extract critical information on relationships between variables from various forms
of pivot tables.
1. Watch the video Pivot Tables opens in new window (24:40)
2. Open the Pivot Table Checklist opens in new window and Pivot Table Excel
Example documents and reference them as you watch the video.
3. Practice creating various types of pivot tables in Excel for drawing insights from data.

Practice Activity: Correlation and Scatterplot
INSTRUCTIONS
A scatterplot is a two-dimensional chart that shows the relationship between two variables. In
this practice activity, you will find and interpret the relationship between variables from a scatter
plot using Excel.
1. Watch the video Correlation and Scatter Plot opens in new window (16:39)
2. Open the Correlation and Scatterplot Example document and reference it as you watch
the video.
3. Practice how to create scatter plots to identify relationships between variables and how to
compute correlation coefficients in Excel. We will revisit this topic and use the concepts
in Chapter 10: Regression Analysis where you will also learn how to add a trendline to
your scatter plot and how it can be used for further analysis.
