Exponents and Power Class 8
Exponents and Power Class 8
EXPONENTS
When a number has to be multiplied by itself several times, it can be expressed in a special form
called exponential form.
ii. (I-())-1
Apositive integer
iv, ( I - ) ) x ) ( ) = land so on.
raised to an odd or even
For cxample: positive power is always positive.
=2x 2× 2= 8(positive)
ii 24=2 x2 × 2x 2= 16 (positive)
i35 =3× 3x 3 x 3x 3 =
i 30 =3× 3x 3 243 (p0sitive)
x3x 3 x3 =729 (positive)
Anegative integer raised to an odd positive power is
For example: negative.
i-2'= (2) x(-2) x (-2) =
i. (-3)' =(-3) x (-3) x (-3) -8 (negative)
=-27 (negative)
Anegative integer raised to an even positive
For example:
power is positive.
L (2)= (-2) x(-2) x (2) x (-2) = 16 (positive)
i. (-3) = (3) x (-3) x (-3) x (3) = 81 (positive)
