REACTION PAPER, CRITIQUE, AND REVIEW

●​ Are specialized forms of writing in which an author reviews or evaluates a subject.


●​ Can be written in 250 – 270 words depending on the level of your analysis in your subject.
●​ Present summaries and opinions but with proofs or evidences.
●​ Have similar format

Subjects for a reaction paper, critique and review

1.​ Scholarly Works- academic books, researches, and articles


2.​ Works of Art – literary texts, exhibits, plays film, performance art, dance even sports.
3.​ Designs – buildings, furniture, fashion design
4.​ Graphic Designs – posters, billboards commercials, and other digital media.

Common Format

I.​ Introduction – title or Name of the Subject, author or creator, date made, and other basic
information about the subject.
II.​ Body (has 2 section)
A.​ Summary – briefly explain what the subject is. Is it a scholarly work? A work of art?
What is its purpose? What does it contain? What can be seen from it?
B.​ Evaluation – presents your judgment of the subject. How well is the subject made?
How do you feel about it? What are its good and bad points? Is the subject
significant? May use critical approaches- Formalism, Feminism, Marxism, and reader
response
III.​ Conclusion – tells your overall impression of the work. Includes final judgment on the
subject’s value, significance, worth, or future improvements.

REACTION PAPER

●​ Presents your reasonable response (logical response) to anything seen, heard, read, or
experienced which means you give opinions with valid basis.
●​ Can be done by anyone - personal, subjective, reflective
●​ Focused on personal appreciation of the subject.
●​ For expression of personal judgment.

REVIEW

●​ Always associated with the term paper or a book report - objective, strengths & weakness,
●​ An objective judgment of something. balanced assessment
●​ Focused on highlighting the good and bad points.
●​ Gives audience an informed judgment about the subject.
●​ Made by knowledgeable people of a field.

CRITIQUE

●​ The most academic and most evaluated evaluation among the three - detailed critical
●​ Is made by experts of the field analysis, logical
reasoning, focuses on
●​ Focused on analyzing and evaluating the components of a work. evidences
●​ Is usually made to provide direction for future improvements of the subject.
