Homework 1
(Due to May 4th, @Ninova 23:59)
(Prepared by Prof.Dr. Melike Nikbay)

Question  1:    Consider  the  initial  condition  problem  of  a  uniform  string  plucked  between
two   walls   with   a   distance   apart   from   each   other.     There   are   no   external   loads   on   the
string,   the   initial   velocity   is   zero   but   it   is   presumed   to   have   an   intial   deflection   shape     as
shown  in  the  following  figure.    Using  the  modal  solution,
a)  Find  an  expression  for  the  transverse  displacement  of  the  string.
b)  Using  Matlab,  plot  the  shape  of  the  traveling  wave  at  various  times

Question  2:    What  is  the  definition  of  torsional  rigidity?  What  is  the  definition  of  polar
moment  of  inertia?  Compare  them  for  various  cross  sectional  beams.

Good Luck !
