SCHOOL AS A SOCIAL SYSTEM

 A school as a social system is a structured organization where individuals (students, teachers,

administrators, and support staff) interact according to established roles, norms, and goals. It
functions as a subsystem of society, helping to transmit knowledge, values, and skills necessary
for social integration and development.

1996]
 There is interaction between the elements and forces in the internal and external environments
of the system. [Hanson 1996]
 Plurality of individuals, interacting with each other according to shared cultural norms and
meanings made up of interaction structured by cultural factors.

ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS OF SOCIAL SYSTEM

1. School — A school is an institution designed for the teaching of students (or "pupils") under the
direction of teachers. A school was identified as social system. There are group of people who
interact with each other in order to achieve the same goal and interacting with the outside
community [Lunenburg 1955]
2. Family — The family is the first agent of socialization, teaching values, norms, and behaviors. It
provides love, security, and basic needs and passes down traditions, customs, and language.
3. Workplace — Provides income and sustains livelihoods. It enhances knowledge, teamwork, and
career growth. Encourages relationships and professional networks.
4. Community — Offers identity, cultural heritage, and shared values. Provides security,
cooperation, and mutual assistance. Encourages participation in governance and social issues.

The family, workplace, community, and school are essential components of the social system, each
playing a unique role in shaping individuals and society. Each of these institutions interconnects to
create a balanced and functional society, shaping individuals into responsible members of their
communities.

KEY ELEMENTS OF THE SCHOOL AS A SOCIAL SYSTEM

STRUCTURE - roles are expectations of positions that are arranged in a hierarchy. Provides a sets of
bureaucratic expectations such as rules regulations, hierarchy, and divisions of labor are designed to
attain school goals in a rational and impartial way.

CULTURE - significantly affects behavior through establishing commitment to shared norms among
individuals. It can improve or impede the effective functioning of the school depending on the mission
and environmental condition.

INDIVIDUAL - the students, teachers, and administrators is a key unit in any social system. Regardless of
position, people bring with them individual needs, beliefs, and a cognitive understanding of the job.

Hence a school, as a social system, is an organized structure where individuals interact based on roles,
norms, and goals, contributing to societal development. It operates alongside key social institutions—
family, workplace, and community—which shape individuals through socialization, education, and
professional growth. Within the school, structure (hierarchy and rules), culture (shared norms), and
individuals (students, teachers, administrators) interact to create an environment that influences
learning and social integration.
