Functions and Transformations - Notes and Examples

Objectives
- Understand the terms function, domain, range, one-to-one function, inverse function, and composition
of functions. - Identify the range of a given function in simple cases, and find the composition of two
given functions. - Determine whether or not a given function is one-to-one, and find the inverse of a
one-to-one function in simple cases. - Illustrate in graphical terms the relation between a one-to-one
function and its inverse. - Understand and use the transformations of the graph of y = f (x) given by
y = f (x) + a, y = f (x + a), y = af (x), y = f (ax), and simple combinations of these.

Before You Start

You should know how to:
1. Substitute into f (x), e.g., √
f (x) = 3x − 2 x
f (1) = 3 − 2 = 1
f (100) = 300 − 20 = 280
f (4) = 12 − 4 = 8.
2
2. Sketch the graph of y = x .

Skills Check
1. Given f (x) = 5x + 2x3 , find:
a) f (1):
f (1) = 5(1) + 2(1)3 = 5 + 2 = 7
b) f (−2):
f (−2) = 5(−2) + 2(−2)3 = −10 + 2(−8) = −10 − 16 = −26
c) f (−10):

f (−10) = 5(−10) + 2(−10)3 = −50 + 2(−1000) = −50 − 2000 = −2050

d) f (8):
f (8) = 5(8) + 2(8)3 = 40 + 2(512) = 40 + 1024 = 1064
e) f (−3):
f (−3) = 5(−3) + 2(−3)3 = −15 + 2(−27) = −15 − 54 = −69
f) f (−1):
f (−1) = 5(−1) + 2(−1)3 = −5 + 2(−1) = −5 − 2 = −7
