Introductory Message

For the facilitator:

Welcome to the Mathematics 5 Module 5 on Converting cu. cm to cu. m and

vice versa; cu.cm to L and vice versa
This Self-Learning Module was collaboratively designed, developed and
reviewed by educators from the Schools Division Office of Pasig City headed by its
Officer-in-Charge Schools Division Superintendent, Ma. Evalou Concepcion A.
Agustin, in partnership with the City Government of Pasig through its mayor,
Honorable Victor Ma. Regis N. Sotto. The writers utilized the standards set by the K
to 12 Curriculum using the Most Essential Learning Competencies (MELC) in
developing this instructional resource.

This learning material hopes to engage the learners in guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Further, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills especially the 5 Cs, namely: Communication,
Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking, and Character while taking into
consideration their needs and circumstances.

In addition to the material in the main text, you will also see this box in the
body of the module:

Notes to the Teacher

This contains helpful tips or strategies that
will help you in guiding the learners.

As a facilitator you are expected to orient the learners on how to use this
module. You also need to keep track of the learners' progress while allowing them to
manage their own learning. Moreover, you are expected to encourage and assist the
learners as they do the tasks included in the module.
For the learner:

LESSON

EXPLORE AND DISCOVER

A truck delivers sand with the volume of 54 000 cm3. What is the
volume of the sand in cubic meter (m3)?

 In the given problem, you are asked to convert the volume of the sand
which is 54 000 cm3 into m3.
 How are we going to do that? Let’s find out.
 Study these conversion units.
1. Convert 1 000 000 cm3 to m3
1 000 000 cu cm(cm3) to cu m(m3) = 1000 000 ÷1 000 000 = 1 cu. m(m3)

2. Convert 1 m3 to cm3

1 cu m (m3) to cu cm(cm3) = 1 x 1000 000= 1 000 000 cu. cm (cm3)

3. Convert 1 L to cm3

1L to 1 cu cm (cm3) = 1 x 1 000 cu cm= 1 000 cu cm

 Remember: converting 1 unit to another

1. Smaller unit to bigger unit we divide
Example: centimeter to meter
Millimeter to kilometer
2. Bigger unit to smaller unit we multiply
Example: meter to centimeter
Liter to centimeter
 Therefore, to convert 54 000 cm3 to m3 we simply divide it by
1,000,000
Since: 1m = 100cm
Therefore= 1m x 1m x 1m= 100 cm x 100 cm x 100 cm
Thus, 1m3= 1,000,000 cm3
54 000 ÷ 1,000,000 = 0.054 m3
54 000 cm3 = 0.054 m3
Another way:
54 000 cm3 = 1m3 = 54 000 x 1m3 = 0.054 m3
1 000 000 cm3 1 000 000

 To change 0.054 cubic meter to cubic centimeter we multiply by

1,000,000
Since: 1m = 100cm
Therefore: 1m x 1m x 1m = 100 cm x 100cm x 100cm
Thus, 1m3 = 1,000,000 cm3
Since you are converting larger unit to smaller unit (m3 to cm3), so the
process that we’re going to use is multiplication.

Look at this example:

54,000 dm3 = ____ cm3
Since, 1 cu dm = 1 000 cu cm
Therefore, 54,000 x 1 000 = 54,000,000 cm3

How about when we Convert Cubic Centimeters to Liters?

1. Convert 15 625 cm3 to L

Solution

First, convert cm3 to ml

1 cm3 = 1 ml
Volume in ml = Volume in cm3
Volume in ml = 15 625 ml
Then, convert ml to L
1 L = 1000 ml

 Set up the conversion to cancel out the desired unit. In this case, we
want Liter (L) to be the remaining unit.

L = (volume in ml) x (1 L ÷ 1000 ml)

L = (15 625 ÷ 1000) L
L = 15.625

2. Convert 442.5 cubic centimeters into liters.

 From the previous example, you should realize that a cubic centimeter
is the same volume as a milliliter

442.5 cm3 = 442.5 ml

From there, you just need to convert cm3 to liters.

1000 cm3 = 1000 ml = 1 L

Finally, convert the units. The 'trick' is to check the set-up of the conversion
to make sure the ml units is cancelled out, leaving you with liters for the
answer:

volume in L = (volume in ml) x (1 L ÷ 1000 ml)

volume in L = 442.5 ml x (1 L ÷ 1000 ml)
volume in L = 0.4425 L

Note: Whenever a volume (or any reported value) is less than 1, always
add the leading zero before the decimal point to make the answer easier
to read.
