A transducer is a device that converts energy from one form to another, specifically converting physical quantities into proportional electrical signals. Electrical transducers offer advantages such as easy amplification, minimized mass-inertia, and reduced friction effects. They can be classified into various types, including primary and secondary, passive and active, and analog and digital, with specific examples like LVDTs for displacement measurement and strain gauges for measuring load and displacement through changes in resistance.

What is a Transducer?

A transducer is a device that converts energy from one form to

another.

An electrical transducer is a device which is capable of converting

physical quantities into a proportional electrical quantity such as
voltage or electric current. Hence it converts any quantity to be
measured into a usable electrical signal. This physical quantity which
is to be measured can be pressure, level, temperature, displacement
etc.
Advantages of electrical transducer:
 Amplification and attenuation are easy.
 Mass-inertia is minimised.
 Friction effects are minimised.
 Small power level required for system
 Easily be used, transmitted and processed.
 Telemetry is easier.
 Miniaturization

Classification of Transducer:
i. Primary and secondary
ii. Passive and active
iii. Analog and digital
iv. Transducer and Inverse Transducer.

LVDT:
Linear variable differential transformers (LVDT) are used to measure
displacement.

LVDT Principle:

Strain Gauge:
Strain gauge is a device which is when subjected to some
force results change in resistance of the material. The change
in resistance is measured in terms of either load or
displacement.
It basically measures strain on the application of stress. Strain
gauge directly is used for the measurement of load and
indirectly it is used for the measurement of displacement.
Theory of Strain Gauge:

ρ = resistivity of the material,

L = length of material,
A = cross-sectional area of material
D = Diameter of the material.

Resistance of an unstrained gauge,

∆D = Change in diameter,
∆L = Change in length of material,
∆A = Change in cross-sectional area of material
∆R = Change in resistance
ρ ρL ρ
= − +

Dividing the whole equation by =
