Practice Midterm 2: Math 12

Tavernetti
REVIEW SESSION: Weds 10-11 (in zoom office hours. It will be recorded).
EXAM TIME: Friday 10/28 in class.

1. There are 12 problems. Please make sure you have all 12 problems BEFORE starting the exam. Each problem is
worth 5 points.
2. It is a violation of the university honor code to assist another person to, in any way, complete this exam, copy
answers from another student’s exam or have another student take the exam, or help take this exam, for you.

3. No notes, books, phones, smartphones, electronic devices, or other materials may be used unless specifically allowed.

4. No calculators of any kind may be used on this exam.

5. Read directions to each problem carefully. Show all work for full credit. In most cases, a correct answer with
no supporting work will receive little or no credit.

6. Neatness as well as proper use of mathematical notation, such as square roots, fractions, etc., will be factored
into the grading.

This practice test is just an example - it is an indication and good practice. It is neither comprehensive of the material
we have learned, nor problem for problem what to expect. Midterm 1 covers all of homework 1-6. Any problem from
the set could be on your actual midterm.
Problem 1 : Find the equation of the circle and clearly state the center and radius, for
2x2 − 4x + 2y 2 + 10y = 0.
Also draw a sketch of this circle.
Problem 2 : Find the equation of a line that is parallel to x = 3y − 10 and passes through the
midpoint of the line segment connecting (0, 2) and (−3, 4).

Problem 3 : Find the equation of a line perpendicular to 2y − x = −4 through the point (1, 2).
Draw a neat sketch of both lines on one set of axes including all intercepts with the coordinate
axes (you don’t need to find/label where the lines intersect each other).

(x − 2) 7 − 2x
Problem 4 : Find the domain in interval notation of the function y =
x+1

Problem 5 : Find the difference quotient of f (x) = 1 − x2

Problem 6 : f (x) = x2 − 3x is even – odd – neither (circle one)

Problem 7 : Graph the piecewise function

−5x + 3, x ≤ 2
f (x) =
x − 4, x>2

Problem 8 : Graph the piecewise function

 3 − x2 , x < −1
f (x) = 2, −1 ≤ x < 0
 |x − 1|, x ≥ 0
Problem 9 : Draw a sketch of f (x) = x(x − 3)(x + 1)2 .

Problem 10 : The cubic polynomial f (x) = x3 + 2x2 − 5x − 6 has a root x = 2. Use long division
to factor this polynomial. Show division work! Sketch this function using its factored form.
Label all roots and intercepts.
8x − 2
Problem 11 : For the function y = , label the intercepts with the coordinate axes and
7x + 3
sketch/label the asymptotes (if there are any). Also state domain and range in interval no-
tation. (You do NOT need to sketch the graph)

3 5
Problem 12 : Solve the inequality ≤
x x+1
Problem 13 - Bonus Practice : A graph an x-intercept at x=1, vertical asymptotes at x = 0 and
x = 4. It also has a horizontal asymptote of y = 2. Sketch the graph and give an equation of
this function.

x2 + 1
Problem 14 - Bonus Practice : Graph y = . Label all asymptotes and intercepts.
x−1
