Question 1 [10 marks]
a) Construct a 2 × 3 matrix 𝐴, not in echelon form, such that the solution of 𝐴𝐱 = 𝟎 is a line in 𝑅 3 .
b) Construct a 2 × 3 matrix 𝐴, not in echelon form, such that the solution of 𝐴𝐱 = 𝟎 is a plane in 𝑅 3 .

Question 2 [20 marks]

One serving of Post Shredded Wheat supplies 160 calories, 5 g of protein, 6 g of fiber, and 1 g of fat. One
serving of Crispix supplies 110 calories, 2 g of protein, 0.1 g of fiber, and 0.4 g of fat.
a) Set up a matrix 𝐵 and a vector 𝐮 such that 𝐵𝐮 gives the amounts of calories, protein, fiber, and fat
contained in a mixture of three servings of Shredded Wheat and two servings of Crispix.
b) Suppose that you want a cereal with more fiber than Crispix but fewer calories than Shredded
Wheat. Is it possible for a mixture of the two cereals to supply 130 calories, 3.20 g of protein, 2.46
g of fiber and 0.64 g of fat? If so, what is the mixture?

Question 3 [20 marks]

Intelligence sources give the information that the message
BOSTON CAFE AT TWO
was sent as 32, 47, 59, 79, 43, 57, 33, 36, 13, 19, 59, 86, 41, 61, 67, 87, 53, 68.
a) Calculate the encoding matrix.
b) Use the above encoding matrix to decode the message
43, 64, 49, 70, 59, 79, 39, 45, 45, 63, 59,79.

Question 4 [10 marks]

Let 𝑉 be the set of all real multiples of exponential functions of the form 𝑒 𝑟𝑥 . Define vector addition ⊕ as
𝑐1 𝑒 𝑟𝑥 ⊕ 𝑐2 𝑒 𝑚𝑥 = 𝑐1 𝑐2 𝑒 (𝑟+𝑚)𝑥
and scalar multiplication as
𝑘ʘ𝑐1 𝑒 𝑟𝑥 = 𝑘𝑐1 𝑒 𝑟𝑥
Explain whether 𝑉 is a vector space or not?

Question 5 [10 marks]

a) The set of polynomials of degree 1 or less is a vector space under the following operations:
(𝑎0 + 𝑎1 𝑥) + (𝑏0 + 𝑏1 𝑥) = (𝑎0 + 𝑏0 ) + (𝑎1 + 𝑏1 )𝑥
𝑘(𝑎0 + 𝑎1 𝑥) = (𝑘𝑎0 ) + (𝑘𝑎1 )𝑥
Is the set of polynomials whose degree is exactly 1 a vector space under these operations? Explain
your reasoning.

b) Consider the set whose only element is the moon. Is this set a vector space under the operations
moon + moon = moon
and
𝑘(moon) = moon
for every real number 𝑘? Explain your reasoning.

Question 6 [30 marks]

Determine whether the solution space of the system 𝐴𝐱 = 𝟎 is a line through the origin, a plane through
the origin, or the origin only. If it is a plane, find an equation for it; if it is a line, find parametric equations
for it.
−1 1 1
a) 𝐴 = [ 3 −1 0 ]
2 −4 −5

1 −2 3
b) 𝐴 = [−3 6 9]
