Objective:
Students will be able to create and explain their own FITT goals based on training
principles to achieve and/or maintain health-related fitness (HRF).
Assessment:
Students will develop a personal fitness plan that includes their individual FITT
goals, explaining how each component (Frequency, Intensity, Time, Type) supports
their health-related fitness objectives.
Key Points:
FITT Principles: Understanding each component—Frequency (how often),
Intensity (how hard), Time (how long), and Type (what kind)—and how
they contribute to a fitness program.
Health-Related Fitness (HRF): Comprehending the importance of HRF
components: cardiovascular endurance, muscular strength, muscular
endurance, flexibility, and body composition.
Goal Setting: Learning how to set realistic and measurable fitness goals
using the SMART (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, Time-bound)
criteria.
Training Principles: Recognizing the principles of progression, overload,
and specificity when designing a fitness plan.
Opening:
Begin with a brief discussion on personal fitness experiences. Ask
students: "What are your current fitness goals, and how do you plan to
achieve them?"
Show a short video clip demonstrating different types of exercises and
their effects on health.
Pose the question: "How do we determine what’s right for our personal
fitness journey?"
Guided Practice:
In pairs, students will analyze a provided sample fitness plan and identify
the FITT components within it.
Encourage students to use guiding questions:
What is the frequency of workouts in this plan?
How intense are the workouts?
What types of exercises are included?
Is the time allocated for each workout sufficient for health
benefits?
Monitor groups as they discuss and provide feedback, ensuring
understanding of each component.
Independent Practice:
Students will complete a worksheet where they outline their personal FITT
goals for the next month.
They must explain how each component will help them achieve their
health-related fitness objectives.
Behavioral expectations include working quietly and respectfully while
focusing on their individual plans.
Closing:
Have students share one aspect of their FITT goals with a partner.
Conduct a quick class survey by asking students to raise their hands to
indicate if they feel confident in setting their own FITT goals now.
Extension Activity:
For students who finish early, they can research and present on a fitness
trend or program that effectively uses the FITT principles and its benefits.
Homework:
Write a reflective journal entry about what they learned regarding FITT
principles and how they plan to incorporate them into their daily lives.
Standards Addressed:
MELCS Standard 1: Demonstrate understanding of the principles of
health-related fitness.
MELCS Standard 3: Apply goal-setting strategies to enhance personal
fitness and health.
