Analog Communication Systems Lab

Course Objectives (‫)اهداف المادة‬: ▪ This lab introduces experiments concerning the design and simulation of a complete analog communication system using LabVIEW.

The objectives of this course are to: reinforce and complement the material covered in the course. The lab includes designing the modulators and

demodulators of different analog modulation schemes such as AM, DSB, SSB, and FM. Each scheme is studied in both time and frequency domain to

obtain power and performance characteristics. The lab concludes with real time testing the NI USRP2901 to study the complexity-performance of

each modulation schemes system.

Course Outcomes  CLO-1. Identify the basic concept of Modulation and signal transmission.
(‫)مخرجات المادة‬:  CLO-2. Distinguish between different AM modulation schemes in terms of complexity-performance.

 CLO-3. Compare AM modulation to FM modulation schemes in terms of complexity-performance.

 CLO-4. Design modulators/demodulators elementary blocks of the different modulation schemes using LABVIEW.

 CLO-5. Implement real time communication between Transmitter (Tx) and Receiver (Rx) using the USRP2901 platforms.

Covered Topics Experiments based on:

(‫)محتوى المادة‬: 1. Fundamental subsystems of communication system and frequency ranges

2. Design the Modulators/Demodulators for Double Sideband transmitted carrier (DSB-TC)

3. Design the Modulators/Demodulators for Double Sideband suppressed carrier (DSB-SC)

4. Design the Modulators/Demodulators for Frequency modulation (FM)

5. Image rejection

6. Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM).

Academic Integrity

Please be fully aware of maintaining integrity in all of your work. All work must be your own. By submitting work under your name, you are indicating that you have
completed the assignment independently. You should not have copied it from others or let others copy your work. Any violation will result in no credit for the
affected assignment and may be subject to penalty.

Cheating and/or academic misconduct in the lab will never be tolerated. Violators will be reported to the director's office and appropriate action will be taken.

Simulation

Attending the lab sessions is crucial for doing well in the course. Students are responsible for any announcements, reading material and lecture content. In
Lab, Simulation is very much encouraged in the form of evaluation questions as it depends on the circuit design and results. So, this process forced students
to attend the Lab sessions regularly to have full explanation of experiments to avoid losing their grades.

Attendance Policy

a. Student who missed more than three Lab sessions without valid and verified reason will be immediately set as AW. The student who missed two
consecutive sessions he will get zero on his report and Technical evaluation of his missed activities.

b. Absent student who has a valid and verified reason will have his activity rescheduled. So, we can fit him in another session in next week if it is possible in

other sections.

c. If the instructor is late, students are supposed to remain in lab for 15 minutes waiting for the arrival of the instructor.
Course Assessment

● Final Project Report:

Report will be assigned at the end of the last two weeks of the semester. No late report will be excused. You have to follow the standard form for writing a report. All
reports as well as graphs should be handled as a softcopy but not hand written. You have to spend enough time for writing a report. In addition, you are encouraged to
discuss the experiment results with others, but you must write up your own results and conclusion. Copied report will result in Zero marks for all concerned. Each one
must submit one report related to the submission of his project.
● Report Template

Each report should include the following items:

 Two Cover pages
 Develop: objectives and description of the experiment.
 Formulation: Data collection (plan / procedure) of the experiment
 Consideration of relevant key: Variable and formula
 Implementation: Simulation and hardware
 Interpretation: Simulation and hardware result
 Comparison: Between software hardware and theory
 Conclusion: decision, recommendations and students’ comments
N.B: A report Template will be available on classroom of each student.

● Project

Project is designed to help you better understand what you have learned. They scaled as 40%. The project's grade in order to know the ability of the student to create,
simulate, and present a project by him/herself. Each student was assigned to accomplish his/her project at the end of the semester which reveals applications on the
main concepts & what they've learned & applied through this lab. Not to forget that in addition to the project submission, he/she had to submit the project report and a
power point too, which shows his/her works & the results they got when they finished his/her simulation, Hardware, and presentation. Also, student must present
and shows his simulation and the hardware parts to consider his project grades otherwise he will get Zero.

 Make Up Policy
1. No makeup of missed session or Final submission project should be done under normal circumstances. Consequently, students missing such activities, with no

justified reason will lose the grade value of such activities.

2. Justified Makeup
Abnormal circumstances do occur and make up activity take place under the following conditions:
a The student shows that missing the activity was beyond his/her control. (Case of relative death or case of hospital entry)

b The academic director accepts his/her case presented and approves the make-up.

c The makeup shall be done in the second week of the missed Lab session.

● Time load

Attending labs is only part of the whole learning process. You are expected to spend some quality time by preparing the simulation before you will be in your Lab
session to verify your simulation results for each experiment. So, student must prepare the simulation of the assigned experiment before attending the Lab
session to keep cumulative technical evaluation grades

Marking Profile:
