Structure
Parallelism is the use of the same pattern of words for two or more ideas that are presented in succession and have
the same level of importance. It is the repetition of a chosen grammatical form within a sentence

In order to write parallel sentences, there are few rules you should follow. Here they are:

Rule 1: When providing a list of items within a phrase, mention all of them in the same grammatical number.
Examples:
Number Not Parallel Parallel
Singular boy, doctor, someone you can trust boy, doctor, friend
Plural boys, doctors, people you to trust boys, doctors, friends

Rule 2: When providing a list of items within a sentence, mention all of them in the same parts of speech
Examples:
Parts of Speech Not Parallel Parallel
Noun boy, doctor, friend, playing boy, doctor, friend, player
Verb check, suggest, appreciative check, suggest, appreciate
Adjective friendly, jolly, perfect, and patience friendly, jolly, perfect, and patient
Adverb gracefully, joyfully, slowly, secret gracefully, joyfully, slowly, secretly

Rule 3: When listing out points, make sure they are in the same verbal forms.
Examples:
Verbals Not Parallel Parallel
Infinitive to act, to bake, to cry, die to act, to bake, to cry, to die
Participle (used as adjective) swimming, to hike, stargazing swimming, hiking, stargazing
Gerund (used as noun) Dancing, Singing, Write Songs Dancing, Singing, Composing

Rule 4: If two or more phrases or clauses mentioning similar or contrasting ideas are used in the same sentence, see
to it that they have the same syntactic structure.
Examples:
Phrases Not Parallel Parallel
Infinitive Phrase to act like a princess, to bake cake, compose songs to act like a princess, to bake cake, to compose songs
Participial Phrase writing letters, cleaning the house, writing letters, cleaning the house,
washing the dishes washing the dishes
Gerund Phrase Writing letters, Cleaning the house, Writing letters, Cleaning the house,
Washing the dishes Washing the dishes
Prepositional Phrase over the horizon, in the park, over the horizon, in the park,

Rule 5: When mentioning a series of actions in a sentence, see to it that all of them are written in the same verb
tense and verb phrase forms.
Examples:

Simple Past walked, ran, having held something walked, ran, caught
