Google Analytics Practicum
Google Analytics Practicum
Team:_____________________
For this exercise each student will learn by experimenting with data from the Google Merchandise Store.
The Google Analytics (GA) demo account is a fully functional GA account that any Google user can
access. It's a great way to look at real business data and experiment with Google Analytics features.
Information on how to get access to the GA demo site can be found here:

The data in the Google Analytics demo account is from the Google Merchandise Store, a real
ecommerce store. The Google Merchandise Store sells Google-branded merchandise. The data in the
account is typical of what you would see for an ecommerce website. It includes the following kinds of
information:
Traffic source data: information about where website visitors originate. This includes data about
organic traffic, paid search traffic, display traffic, etc.
Content data: information about the behavior of users on the site. This includes the URLs of
pages that visitors look at, how they interact with content, etc.
Transactional data: information about the transactions that occur on the Google Merchandise
Store website.
Because it shows actual data from an ecommerce website, the demo account is useful for exploring
Google Analytics reports and features. Here are a few things you can do using the demo account:
View all standard reports populated with real data from the Google Merchandise Store
View AdWords and Search Console integration related data
Alter reports by adding filters and secondary dimensions, and by changing the report view
View predefined dashboards and segments imported from the Solutions Gallery
Compare audience, acquisition, behavior and conversion performance to a previous date range
period
Segment the data using your own custom segments
Create your own dashboards, custom reports, and attribution models
For this practicum students must navigate the data for the date range of August 15, 2016 to September
13, 2016. Once the range is set everyone will answer the below questions by navigating GA and finding
the right data points. Upon conclusion each student will give a recommendation on what the Google
Merchandise Store could do to improve based on insight garnered from the data collection. Don’t be
afraid to get creative.
Each of the ten questions will be worth five points and the final recommendation will be worth 10.
1. What is the average bounce rate for the entire website?
2. How many people are on the website right now and what source drove the most live visitors?
3. How many non-branded visits from organic search traffic occurred on Wednesday, August 31, 2016?
4. What percentage of visitors are returning visitors to the site, as opposed to new visitors?
5. How much revenue did Facebook drive for the Google Merchandise Store?
6. How much revenue did the Google Nexus 6 (device) drive for the Google Merchandise Store?
7. What search query, aside from (not set), drove the most traffic to the site?
8. What country has the fastest average domain lookup time (fastest website load speed) and how fast
was it?
9. Which search engine drove the second most traffic to the Google Merchandise Store?
10. How much organic search traffic came from Chicago and what was the average time on page?
Bonus Question
After sifting through mounds of data and information, what course of action (digital marketing) could
the Google Merchandise Store do to increase revenue? Make sure you justify it with data. It can be data
you collected for the practicum or it could be data you stumbled upon.
