Turning a Blind Eye: Climate Change and Our Indifference

Have you heard of climate change? Are you aware of the causes and
impacts of it? If not, listen carefully because some people think that climate
change is just a simple issue present in today’s generation. It is just an issue that
will be solved easily by the government. However, we will change that
perspective.

Let us first define climate change. According to the United Nations, climate
change refers to long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns. It affects
the physical environment as well as all aspects of both natural and health systems.
But, what causes climate change? It is the global warming. This is the major cause
of climate change. It is caused by emissions of greenhouse gasses, which warms
the air and get trapped within the atmosphere by the ozone layer. It further
increases as the temperature of the atmosphere absorbs more radiation and
heat than our planet is capable of radiating.

As of today, climate change becomes a threat as global warming is

speeding up. Tropics around the world will be drier and hotter. In fact, the average
temperature of the Earth’s surface is now about 1.2 degrees warmer than it was
before industrial revolution.

It further reveals that 3.6 billion people already live-in areas susceptible to
climate change. It can impact health in a myriad of ways, including death and
illness from increasingly frequent extreme weather events, such as heatwaves,
storms and floods, and mental health issues. According to (WHO), recent
research attributes 37% of heat-related deaths to human-induced climate
change. Heat-related deaths among those over 65 have risen by 70% in two
decades.

In addition, rising greenhouse concentrations not only warms the air, but the
ocean too which causes the ocean to become more acidic as both carbon dioxide
and heat are absorbed. This can cause ocean water to expand and takes up more
space. In fact, the sea level has risen at roughly twice the speed of the preceding 80
years over the last 20 years. Additionally, recent research also found out that
tropical ocean turned greener.

However, scientists believe that humans are responsible for climate change.
In the 1800’s before the industrial revolution, human activities have been the
main driver of global warming, primarily due to burning fossil fuels like coal, oil,
and gas. And as time passed by, human started using appliances that produce
gases, harmful to the ozone layer which adds to the growing changes in the
climate. These activities are done to support energy, industry, transport, buildings,
agriculture and land use.

To sum it up, climate change is not just an environmental issue, as too many
people still believe. It is an all-encompassing threat, to health, to agriculture, to
peace and security. We are now at a point where even the last government has
given up denying this reality. Climate change is real and it is growing, it is up to
you if you’ll prevent the causes of it or will cause more to it. Before ending my
speech, I’ll leave you this quote from a climate activist, Greta Thunberg, “We
can’t save the world by playing by the rules, because the rules have to be
changed”.
