When Technology and Humanity Cross

Introduction
Technology keeps on progressing due to the changing times and environment and also to
the ever-progressing mind of mankind. It would not be possible for all these technological
advancements to exist if it were not for the brilliance, creativeness, and power of the mind.
However, it is also important to note that anything too much is bad. The same problem is
faced by technology. Although it has been very helpful to people, it is still not immune to
criticisms and backlash. Various ethical dilemmas have been identified throughout time
involving the use of different technological devices and their effects on humanity. Usually,
different problems arise when either the technological device available is misused or if it
was invented to produce bad results. People who are aware of the possible dangers of the
use and misuse of technology are not keeping still. They lay these dilemmas for the public to
see and realize what they are in for.

Television Sets, Mobile Phones, Computers and Humanity


A number of technological devices can be easily found inside the home, the most accessible
place to anyone. It can easily be inferred that these technological devices are some of the
most popular and commonly used types of devices across all age groups. Almost all
households, if not all, own these types of devices. To be more specific, these celebrities in
the field of technology are television sets, mobile phones, and computers.

Television
Television is widely used in households for entertainment, information, and
advertisements. Studies show that most homes in the Philippines own at least one television
set. The invention of television dates back to the late 1800s, where experiments by different
scientists contributed to its development.

Mobile Phones
Mobile phones have become essential tools in communication. Over time, mobile phones
evolved from simple calling and texting devices to smartphones capable of internet
browsing, photography, and entertainment. In 1973, Martin Cooper made the first mobile
phone call, marking the beginning of mobile phone history.

Computers and Laptops


Computers and laptops play significant roles in education, business, and communication.
Charles Babbage designed the first analytical engine, which became the foundation of
modern computers. The first portable laptop, Osborne 1, was introduced in 1981, paving
the way for modern laptops.
Roles Played by These Technological Advancements
Television is mainly used for information dissemination, advertisements, and
entertainment. Mobile phones are primarily for communication, but they also serve as
multi-functional devices. Computers and laptops are widely used for work, education, and
entertainment.

Robotics and Humanity


Robots are now widely used in different industries. The International Federation of
Robotics defines robots as programmable machines capable of performing tasks with a
certain level of autonomy. Robots are classified into service robots, industrial robots, and
personal robots.

Roles Played by Robots


Robots assist in various industries, such as manufacturing, healthcare, and domestic tasks.
Isaac Asimov formulated the Three Laws of Robotics, which outline ethical principles for
robot behavior.

Ethical Dilemmas in Robotics


One of the ethical dilemmas in robotics is safety. Who should be accountable if a robot
causes harm? Another issue is the possibility of robots developing emotions, which could
lead to further ethical concerns. If a robot violates its programming, should the blame fall on
the inventor or the robot itself? These are ongoing discussions as technology advances.
