Chapter 1: Fundamentals of Arithmetic

Mathematics is the study of numbers, shapes, and patterns. Basic arithmetic

operations form the foundation of mathematics.

Basic Arithmetic Operations:

1. Addition (+) - Combining two or more numbers to get a sum.

1. Example: 3 + 5 = 8
2. Subtraction (-) - Finding the difference between numbers.

1. Example: 10 - 4 = 6

3. Multiplication (×) - Repeated addition of a number.

1. Example: 4 × 3 = 12

4. Division (÷) - Splitting a number into equal parts.

1. Example: 12 ÷ 3 = 4

Properties of Arithmetic:

 Commutative Property: Order does not affect addition or

multiplication.

o Example: 4 + 2 = 2 + 4

 Associative Property: Grouping does not affect sum or product.

o Example: (2 + 3) + 4 = 2 + (3 + 4)

 Distributive Property: Multiplication distributes over addition.

o Example: 3 × (4 + 2) = (3 × 4) + (3 × 2)

Conclusion: Mastering basic arithmetic is essential for solving everyday

problems and forming a strong mathematical foundation for advanced topics.
