Driving Drowsiness Detection System Intro
Driving Drowsiness Detection System Intro
Introduction :
Road safety is still a major global concern, and one of the most common yet dangerous
causes of road accidents is sleepy driving. The National Highway Traffic Safety
Administration (NHTSA) estimates that sleepy driving causes about 1,500 fatalities,
71,000 injuries, and 100,000 police-reported crashes in the US alone each year, with an
estimated $12.5 billion in economic losses. More than 40% of drivers acknowledge
dozing off while driving, according to studies, but many are still ignorant of the serious
dangers that come with being tired. Drowsiness is a serious concern on roads around the
world because it has consequences on driving performance that are similar to those of
drunkenness, such as blurred vision, delayed reaction times, and poor decision-making.
The need for automatic, real-time sleepiness detection systems has never been more
pressing as vehicle utilization keeps rising.
The goal of this research is to create a sophisticated driving drowsiness detection system
that combines embedded technology, machine learning, and the Internet of Things to
offer a scalable and reasonably priced real-time driver monitoring solution. An Arduino
Uno microcontroller is used in the system's construction, and it makes use of a number
of sensors to identify signs of exhaustion, including heart rate variability and eye blink
frequency. The detection mechanism is powered by a machine learning model that has
been trained on high-accuracy datasets, reaching an amazing 98% accuracy in
identifying indicators of drowsiness. The device promptly notifies the motorist via
sounding and visual alerts upon detection, averting possible collisions.
The system has an alcohol detection module in addition to sleepiness detection, which
adds an extra degree of security by making sure that drunk drivers don't operate motor
vehicles. This multifaceted strategy increases its efficacy in reducing the risks connected
to driving while intoxicated. Additionally, the frontend, which was created with React,
offers an easy-to-use interface for tracking data in real time, making the system very
accessible and useful for integration into both private and business automobiles.
This study aims to close the gap between technology and road safety by utilizing
developments in machine learning, embedded systems, and the Internet of Things to
provide a broadly deployable, affordable, and effective way to prevent sleepy driving. The
suggested method could lead to a safer and more intelligent transportation ecosystem
by drastically lowering traffic-related fatalities, injuries, and financial losses.
