Laboratory Manual

The laboratory manual demonstrates atmospheric pressure using a balloon and a plastic bottle with hot and cold water. When hot water is poured into the bottle, the balloon inflates due to the increased air pressure inside, while cooling the bottle causes the balloon to deflate as the air contracts and atmospheric pressure pushes inward. Observations and questions guide the understanding of these concepts.

Laboratory Manual: Investigating Atmospheric Pressure

with a Balloon and Bottle

Objective:

To demonstrate the concept of atmospheric pressure and its effects on objects.

Materials:

 Clear plastic water bottle

 Balloon
 Hot water
 Cold water

Procedure:

1. Heat the Water: Heat the water in a kettle or microwave.

2. Pour Hot Water: Pour the hot water into the plastic bottle.
3. Quickly Place the Balloon: Quickly stretch the mouth of the balloon over
the mouth of the bottle.
4. Observe: Observe what happens to the balloon where the water inside the
bottle is hot.
5. Cool the Bottle: Once the balloon has inflated, place the bottle in a bowl of
cold water.
6. Observe: Observe what happens to the balloon as the bottle cools.

Observations:

 Record your observations of what happens to the balloon as the water heats
and cools.

Questions:

1. What happened to the balloon as the hot water was poured into the bottle?
o Answer: The balloon inflated.

2. Why did the balloon inflate?

o Answer: As the water cools, the air inside the bottle contracts,
creating a partial vacuum. The atmospheric pressure outside the bottle
is greater than the pressure inside, causing the balloon to inflate to
equalize the pressure.

3. What happened to the balloon when the bottle was placed in cold water?
o Answer: The balloon deflated.

4. Why did the balloon deflate?

o Answer: When the bottle is cooled, the air inside contracts further,
reducing the pressure inside the bottle. This causes the atmospheric
pressure to push the balloon inward, deflating it.
