DEFINITION:
“Smart growth describes an approach to planning and development that focuses on sustainable development,
promoting efficient land use, reducing sprawl, and creating livable communities, designed for benefits to the
economy and the environment.”
OR

“Planned economic and community development that attempts to control urban sprawl and worsening
environmental conditions.”

Ten principles of smart growth


Smart Growth America references the ten principles of smart growth.

1. Mix land uses.

2. Take advantage of compact building design.

3. Create a range of housing opportunities and choices.

4. Create walkable neighborhoods.

5. Foster distinctive, attractive communities with a strong sense of place.

6. Preserve open space, farmland, natural beauty, and critical environmental areas.

7. Direct development towards existing communities.

8. Provide a variety of transportation choices.

9. Make development decisions predictable, fair, and cost effective.

10. Encourage community and stakeholder collaboration in development decisions.

Mixed Land Uses:

Promotes the integration of residential, commercial, and recreational areas to enhance accessibility and reduce
transportation needs.

Compact Building Design:


Encourages efficient use of space to minimize urban sprawl.

Range of housing:
Develop a variety of housing options to ensure that everyone can find a home within their budget and inside the
community.

Create walkable neighborhoods:


Make is easy and safe to walk or bike rather than drive by designing the streets and paths with this in mind.
Attractive communities:
Provide a sense of place, culture and history for neighborhoods to become great places to live.

Preserve nature
Everyone who wants nature, parks, trails, and recreation opportunities, preserve Open Spaces – Protect parks, fields,
and green space that preserves the natural environment and includes space for people to enjoy nature.

Direct towards existing communities:


Residents should be involved in planning decisions to make sure that development matches the needs and wishes of the
people that live there.

Public Transportation Options:


Make sure that you have accessible and reliable public transit options to help reduce traffic congestion and provide
alternatives to driving.

Predictable, fair, and cost effective:


Using low energy consuming designs and sustainable building materials to minimize environmental impact.

Encourage collaboration:
Strong relationship will create collaboration among different groups important to development. The people who live and
work in a community know best what it needs to grow and improve.
