Module Descriptor ISP

The Information Systems Project module provides students with the opportunity to conduct an in-depth study of a specialized area in information systems, focusing on the analysis, design, development, and evaluation of a small Information System. Students will complete a project proposal, interim report, and final project report, with assessments designed to test their ability to manage projects, identify ethical issues, and communicate complex information. Successful completion requires achieving a weighted average of at least 40% across various assessments totaling 400 learning hours.

MODULE AIMS
This module this module provides the opportunity for individual in depth study in a specialised area of
information systems. It aims to develop in the student the ability to tackle, individually, a selected
problem of suitable scale and complexity, and to develop the ability to present ideas in a series of
written reports.

MODULE CONTENT

The student will analyse, design, develop and evaluate a small Information System under supervision.
Including:
 Identifying a suitable Information System.
 Preparing a project proposal.
 Defining the aims and scope of the Information System.
 Developing and evaluating the Information System.
 Writing the project report

This work is done in accordance with a suitable methodology (covered elsewhere in the programme),
which typically includes, among other tasks:
 Iterative design, development and evaluation with appropriate stakeholder involvement;
 Eliciting and enhancing requirements.
 Developing the requirements via the use of prototyping;
 Quality control.
 Project management, including the management of and appropriate communication with relevant
parties throughout.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
On successful completion of this module a student will be able to:
1. Select and apply an appropriate approach to develop a small Information System.
2. Project manage the analysis design, development and deployment of a small Information
System.
3. Identify ethical issues and propose appropriate solutions.
4. Research, analyse and report on relevant literature associated with the project.
5. Critically evaluate the project and the approach used.
6. Communicate complex information in the form of a written report.

MODULE LEARNING PLAN

LEARNING, TEACHING AND ASSESSMENT STRATEGY

During the first six weeks of the first semester, the students watch a series of six online video
lectures associated with:
 Identifying a suitable Information System.
 Preparing a project proposal.
 Defining the aims and scope of the Information System.
 Developing and evaluating the Information System.
 Writing the project report

At the end of the six week period the students submit a project proposal that is marked by the
designated supervisor for a particular student. The designated supervisor contacts the student via
email with feedback on the project proposal. From this point onwards the designated supervisor
provides the primary support, via email and Skype, for the writing of the interim report and project
report.

The video lectures and supporting tutorials, a student Information Systems Project handbook, an
Information Systems Project discussion forum, an Information Systems Project chat room and the
assignments associated with the Information Systems Project are made available via Campus (NCC
Education’s virtual learning environment).

A project report is submitted at the end of the second semester.
