Set-1_Practice (Tutorial) Problems

The document outlines a set of practice problems related to the Vapour Power Cycle and Gas Turbine Cycle, with a submission deadline of October 27, 2023. Students are required to solve any three out of five problems, which involve calculations related to steam power plants and their efficiencies. Submission guidelines include scanning handwritten solutions into a single PDF file for upload to the designated folder on CANVAS.

Set-1: Practice (Tutorial) Problems

Practice (Tutorial) Problems on Vapour Power Cycle (Part-2.1) and

Gas Turbine Cycle (Part-2.2)

Deadline for submission: Sunday 27 Oct 23:59 hrs

(CA Marks for Set-1 Practice (Tutorial) Problems: 1.5 marks)
Note: You need to attempt to solve any 3 problems out of the 5 problems.

Submission guideline:
Please scan all pages (or take pictures) of your workout (handwritten) and combine
to one (1) PDF file. Upload the PDF file to the folder “Submission_ Set-1_Practice
(Tutorial) Problems” under “Assignments” of CANVAS.

Practice (Tutorial) Problem-1_Part-2.1

In a reheat-cycle power plant, steam enters the high-pressure turbine at 5 MPa, 450oC,
and expands 0.5 MPa, after which it is reheated to 450oC. The steam is then expanded
through the low-pressure turbine to 7.5 kPa. Liquid water leaves the condenser at
30oC, is pumped to 5 MPa, and returned to the steam generator. Each turbine is
adiabatic, with an isothermal efficiency of 87%, and the pump efficiency is 82%. If the
total power output of the turbines is 10,000 kW, determine (a) the mass flow rate of
steam, (b) the pump power input, and (c) the power plant thermal efficiency. (1 bar =
100 kPa = 0.1 MPa). [Ans: 7.83 kg/s, 47.84 kW, 34%]

Practice (Tutorial) Problem-2_Part-2.1

An ideal steam power plant is designed to operate on a reheat cycle and produce a
net power output of 0.5 MW. Steam enters the high-pressure turbine at 8 MPa, 550oC,
and is expanded to 0.6 MPa before being reheated to 550 oC. The reheated steam is
then expanded in the low-pressure turbine to 10 kPa.
(a) Determine the steam flow rate to the turbines. [Ans. 0.29 kg/s]
(b) Determine the power input to the pump. [Ans. 2.35 kW]
(c) If the condenser water cooling water temperature increase is restricted to a
maximum of 10oC, what is the cooling water flow rate? [Ans. 16.5 kg/s]
(d) If the steam velocity in the turbine condenser connecting pipe is restricted to a
maximum of 100 m/s, what is the connecting pipe diameter? [Ans. 0.233 m]
It may be assumed that the ambient temperature is 30oC.
Practice (Tutorial) Problem-3_Part-2.1
A steam power plant operates on the Rankine cycle with a boiler pressure of 100
bar. The steam leaves the boiler at 500oC and is expanded isentropically to 10 bar. It
is then returned to the boiler and reheated to 500oC at constant pressure. Finally, it
is expanded isentropically to a condenser pressure of 0.035 bar. Assuming that the
feed pump compression is isentropic, determine the following:
(a) the dryness fraction at LP turbine outlet. [Ans: 0.9065]
(b) the total turbine specific work output [kJ/kg]. [Ans: 1746.27 kJ/kg]
(c) the cycle efficiency, and [Ans: 44%]
(d) the specific steam consumption [kg/kWh]. [Ans: 2.07 kg/kWh]
