Techno Tutorial Center

The document outlines various problems related to the design of steel structures, focusing on compression members and beams. It includes calculations for determining the adequacy of steel columns and beams under specific loads and conditions using different steel grades. The problems require checking resistance to bending, shear buckling, and lateral torsional buckling for various configurations and dimensions of steel members.

(Problems on design of compression members)

#1. Determine the position where the steel column, made of IPE-300 should be
braced from its base, if it is designed to sustain a design load f 400KN including
its own weight and has a length of 8m. The column is assumed to be fixed at its
base and pined at the top in both directions.

Use S-275 steel grade.

#2.the 14m long welded column section compression member of S-355 steel
shown below has fixed support about both principal axis at each end (Ly=14m )
and has central brace that prevent the lateral deflections in the minor principal
plane (Lz=7m). Check the adequacy of the member for the factored axial
compressive force corresponding to the nominal design dead load f 380KN and
nominal imposed load of 480KN.

Where b=300mm,

h=355mm,

tf=40mm,

tw=28mm,

Iy=747x106 mm^4 ,

Iz=286x10^6 mm4,

iy=145mm,

iz=89.6mm

A=35700mm2

#3.for a built up cross section shown in the figure bellow, compute the
compression resistance if the length of the member is 3m and the column is
assumed to be fixed at its base and pinned at top. Use
tf=10mm,tw=3mm,Ko=4,ᴪ=1.

h=200mm

#4. Determine the maximum length of steel column (made from IPE-360 steel
section), if it is designed to sustain a design axial load of 500KN including its
own weight. The column is assumed to be fixed at its base and pinned at its
top in both directions.

Beams
Generally, such members should be checked for
(1) resistance of cross-section to bending ULS

MEd=Mc,Rd

Where

MEd=is the design of bending moment

Mc,Rd =is the design bending resistance about the principal axis

(2) Resistance to shear buckling ULS

Techno Tutorial Center ..Steel Structure…….2019/20
VEd=Vc,Rd

Where

VEd is the design value of shear force

Vc,Rd is the design shear resistance

3.

4. Interaction of shear force and torsional moment

VEd =Vpl,T,Rd

Where

Vpl,T,Rd = is the reduced shear resistance of the section.

Problems on Beam
#1. Determine he maximum length of simply supported beam made of 460UB82
to support a nominal un factored dead load of 150KN/m and (including its own
weight ) and nominal un factored imposed load of 100 KN/m .The beam is
prevented against lateral torsional buckling through bracing.

# 2.The frame shown in the figure below is taken from a ware-house. The beam
is made of 360UB 56.7.

16.14w

BMD

9.92w

4.46w

SFD

7.22w

. Determine the maximum uniformly distributed factored line load w that can
be supported by the beam.

#3.check the adequacy of a 4m simply supported beam shown in the figure

below. Made of 460x191UB82 and steel grade of S-275 (fy=275N/mm2 and
Fu=430 N/mm2),to support a nominal factored equal end moment of 400KN-
m. the beam is prevented from lateral torsional buckling through adequate
bracing .(Neglect the self-weight of the beam, as it is insignificant as compared
to applied end moment).

#4. Check the adequacy of simply supported beam having a length of 6.5m made
of 533x210x92UB in S-275 to support an unfactored distributed dead load of 15
KN/m and a concentrated dead load of 50KN, and unfactored distributed live
load of 30KN/m and a concentrated live load of 60KN. The beam is restrained
against LTB through lateral bracing.
