#1. Determine the position where the steel column, made of IPE-300 should be
braced from its base, if it is designed to sustain a design load f 400KN including
its own weight and has a length of 8m. The column is assumed to be fixed at its
base and pined at the top in both directions.
#2.the 14m long welded column section compression member of S-355 steel
shown below has fixed support about both principal axis at each end (Ly=14m )
and has central brace that prevent the lateral deflections in the minor principal
plane (Lz=7m). Check the adequacy of the member for the factored axial
compressive force corresponding to the nominal design dead load f 380KN and
nominal imposed load of 480KN.
Where b=300mm,
h=355mm,
tf=40mm,
tw=28mm,
Iy=747x106 mm^4 ,
Iz=286x10^6 mm4,
iy=145mm,
iz=89.6mm
A=35700mm2
#3.for a built up cross section shown in the figure bellow, compute the
compression resistance if the length of the member is 3m and the column is
assumed to be fixed at its base and pinned at top. Use
tf=10mm,tw=3mm,Ko=4,ᴪ=1.
h=200mm

#4. Determine the maximum length of steel column (made from IPE-360 steel
section), if it is designed to sustain a design axial load of 500KN including its
own weight. The column is assumed to be fixed at its base and pinned at its
top in both directions.

Beams
Generally, such members should be checked for
(1) resistance of cross-section to bending ULS
MEd=Mc,Rd
Where
Mc,Rd =is the design bending resistance about the principal axis
Where
VEd =Vpl,T,Rd
Where
Problems on Beam
#1. Determine he maximum length of simply supported beam made of 460UB82
to support a nominal un factored dead load of 150KN/m and (including its own
weight ) and nominal un factored imposed load of 100 KN/m .The beam is
prevented against lateral torsional buckling through bracing.
# 2.The frame shown in the figure below is taken from a ware-house. The beam
is made of 360UB 56.7.
