Course Rules and Regulations

1. Travelling: Make sure you make travel arrangements based on your class
schedule, because travel is not an university sanctioned excuse for missing
classes.

2. You MUST read the school of Nursing and Health Studies student’s handbook
during the first week of class and familiarize yourself with the content. I DIDN’T
KNOW, is not an excuse.

3. ATTENDANCE/PARTICIPATION: ATTENDNCE AND PARTICIPATION ARE

EXPECTED.

4. Typically there are NO EXTRA CREDIT ASSIGNMENTS for this course. Your
grade is solely based on your performance on the quizzes exams. VERY
SELDOMLY I “MIGHT” give an extra credit pop quiz. These CANNOT BE MADE
UP UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES

5. ASSIGNMENT/QUIZ DEADLINES: Deadlines are non-negotiable. Missed

deadlines require a doctor’s note otherwise the student will receive a zero for
the assignment.

6. If you have issues regarding the course or the professor you MUST address
those issues with the professor first. If you cannot resolve them with the
professor, you may then follow the chain of command, and arrange to meet with
the Associate Dean for Academic Affairs. If you still cannot resolve it you may
then make an appointment to meet with the Dean of the school of Nursing

7. You must check your UM email daily. You must make sure that you are receiving
emails from the professor. Assignments and instructions are posted on
blackboard.

8.Quizzes/Exams There will be 3 exams for the semester. One of the exams will be a TAKE-HOME
exam. The material in the take home exam WILL NOT BE COVERED IN CLASS, it will be covered
in a recorded lecture.. EXCEPT FOR THE TAKE-HOME EXAM, ALL OTHER EXAMS WILL BE
IN PERSON AND THERE ARE NO OPTIONS TO TAKE IT REMOTELY. DURING EXAMS,
"""NO""" HATS, HOODIES, OR ANY HEAD GEAR ALLOWED UNLESS IT IS FOR
RELIGIOUS OR MEDICAL REASONS AND THEN YOU NEED TO PROVIDE
DOCUMENTATION FOR THE LATTER.
. IF YOU MISSED AND EXAM AND YOU DO NOT HAVE A VALID EXCUSE, YOU WILL NOT
BE ALLOWED TO TAKE A MAKE UP. MAKE UP EXAMS WILL CONTAIN ITEMS IN
FORMATS OTHER THAN MULTIPLE CHOICE AND TRUE OR FALSE SUCH AS, FIILL IN
THE BLANK, AND SHORT ANSWER QUESTIONS

9. Exam/Quiz Reviews. If you are not satisfied with the grade you EARNED in an
exam you are welcome to set an appointment with the professor to go over the
exam. You can only review ONE EXAM/QUIZ PER APPOINTMENT. In other
words you can’t make an appointment to see 3 exams at once. DO NOT wait to
the end of the semester to review all of the exams.
10. “I” (Incomplete grade). As per UNIVERSITY RULES a grade of
INCOMPLETE will be given to a student that has completed no less than 50% of
the semester's work, maintained a passing grade throughout the semester and
that has a valid excuse for having missed that work, illness, family issues etc. A
verifiable excuse will be necessary. You also have to have a passing grade with
the missing assignment. If you have ongoing personal issues that are interfering
with your school work, you should notify the office of the Dean of Students, and
they will in turn notify faculty of the situation.

11. Contacting your Professor: I teach I teach 3 lecture courses, 5 labs and an online
course, which means that I get a barrage of emails from students on a daily
basis. I will answer your email as I am able to do so, but you must allow at least
24 hours. On weekends I rarely have time look through my emails, so expect
any emails sent Fridays after 12:00 noon, to be answered by the
following Monday. Sometimes I do answer emails over the weekend but it is
not the norm.

12. Letters of Recommendations: Students often request letters of

recommendations. I write very very few letters of recommendations typically 2
or 3 a year to deserving students. For me to write an honest and accurate letter
of recommendation, to a Professional Graduate program (Medicine, Pharmacy,
Physical, therapy, dentistry etc.) the student must meet the following minimum
requirements:

a. Having taken Human Anatomy –HCS 212 with or without lab, and
Systemic Physiology HCS 215 with or without lab, and having scored
no less than 93%.
b. Involvement in some science related extracurricular activity such as:
Internships, observerships, workshops, research activities, volunteer
work etc, have documentation that corroborates your participation.
If the students do not meet these criteria, I will not be able to write
a recommendation.
c. The student must have NO UNEXCUSED absences
d. Have demonstrated professional behavior in class
e. Have completed all assignments and exams within the deadline

NO EXCEPTIONS

EVEN IF THE STUDENT MEETS ALL OF THE ABOVE REQUIREMENTS, IT IS

ULTIMATELY UP TO THE PROFESSOR, WHETHER OR NOT THE STUDENT WILL
GET A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATIONRECOMMENDATION
Honor Code: Students are required to sign the Honor Pledge
attached at the end of this syllabus. By signing
this at the beginning of the semester you agree to
abide by the honor code and accept the
consequences brought on by breaking it.

All students will be subject to video

proctoring during examinations.
Video monitoring during regular class
sessions may be used at the instructor’s
discretion to assess student’s in-class
activities.

From the Student Handbook: The University

seeks to promote a teaching and learning
environment free from material and substantial
classroom disruptions. Faculty and students have
a joint responsibility to develop and maintain an
optimal learning environment. Faculty members
and teaching staff have the authority and
responsibility to effectively manage their
classroom environments. Instructors may
determine the time and manner for student
questions and expression of points of view in the
instructional setting. Accordingly, instructors
should establish, communicate and enforce
reasonable expectations of classroom behavior
and decorum via the syllabus and classroom
discussion. This policy is not intended to
discourage appropriate classroom expression,
discussion, or disagreement, but promote
respectful interactions.

Classroom rules and expectations may be

established by the instructor and communicated
to the students via the syllabus and classroom
discussion at the outset of the course. Classroom
rules and expectations must be reasonable and
appropriate in light of the classroom and
instructional setting, learning objectives and
teaching strategies; and may vary depending
upon the educational context.

Any activities or behaviors that disrupt the

learning environment can be considered as
interfering with the learning process.
