Unit 2 Study Guide – Polynomial Functions

Topic 1: Factoring
Factor each polynomial completely

1. 8x3 + 27
2. 64𝑥 3 − 1
3. 4x3 – 32
4. 𝑥 4 + 6𝑥 2 − 40
5. 𝑥 3 + 10𝑥 2 + 21𝑥
6. x2y2 – 3x2 – 4y2 + 12

Topic 2: Dividing Polynomials and Remainder Theorem

Use long division or synthetic division as appropriate for #7-9

7. (4𝑥 4 + 20𝑥 3 + 27𝑥 2 − 2𝑥 − 10) ÷ (4𝑥 2 − 1)

8. (4𝑥 3 − 8𝑥 2 + 3𝑥 − 8) ÷ (2𝑥 − 1)
9. (3𝑥 3 − 11𝑥 − 10) ÷ (𝑥 + 1)
10. Use the Remainder Theorem to find the remainder when 3x5 – x4 – 5x + 10 is divided by (x+2). Then
state if (x+2) is a factor.
11. Find k given that the remainder is 5 when (x4 + kx3 – 7x2 + 8x + 25)  (x – 2)

Topic 3: Solving Polynomials

Solve each polynomial equation.

12. 27𝑥 3 − 1 = 0
13. 3𝑥 3 − 4𝑥 2 + 9𝑥 − 12 = 0
14. 𝑥 3 + 8 = 0
15. Given that (𝑥 + 2) is a factor, solve: 𝑥 3 − 10𝑥 = −3𝑥 2 + 24

Topic 4: Transformations of Cubic Functions

State the transformations from 𝑦 = 𝑥 3. Transformations must be stated in the correct order.

16. 𝑦 = (𝑥 − 10)3 + 17
1
17. 𝑦 = −(2 𝑥 + 2)3
18. 𝑦 = 4𝑥 3
19. 𝑦 = (−2𝑥 − 16)3
Write the equation of the cubic function that has the given characteristics.

20. Reflected over the y-axis, horizontal stretch by a scale of 2, shifted 3 left, and shifted down 7.

1
21. Reflected over the x axis, vertical compression by a scale of 3, shifted up 3, and shifted 2 left.

Topic 5: Graphing Polynomial Functions by hand and Identifying End Behavior

Graph each function without the use of a calculator! Show all zeros, correct bounce/pass through, and end
behavior. You will not have a calculator for these questions on the unit test!

22. 𝑓(𝑥) = 3𝑥 3 + 15𝑥 2 − 12𝑥 − 60

23. 𝑓(𝑥) = 𝑥 4 (2𝑥 + 4)(𝑥 − 2)2 (5𝑥 + 15)

Topic 6: Key Features of Polynomial Functions
24. State each key feature based on the graph. Use correct interval notation when applicable.

25. Sketch a polynomial function with the given characteristics:

Domain: (-∞,∞)
Range: (-∞,∞)

Decreasing: (-2, 0)
Zeroes: 3 (multiplicity of 3) and -2 (multiplicity of 2)
End Behavior: As x→∞ y→∞
As x→-∞ y→-∞

Topic 7: Application Problems

26. The volume of a shipping box (in 𝑓𝑡 3 ) can be expressed as the polynomial
𝑉(𝑥) = 2𝑥 3 + 11𝑥 2 + 17𝑥 + 6. Each dimension of the box can be expressed as a linear expression. If
the length of the box can be expressed as (𝑥 + 2) ft, find the linear factors that express the width and
the height of the shipping box.
27. An open box is constructed by cutting out congruent squares from the corner of a 20” by 30” piece of
cardboard and then folding up each side along the dotted lines. Let x be the height of the box as shown.
Round all answers to nearest hundredths when necessary.

a. Write the equation for the volume of the box in factored form.

b. Use a graphing device to help you draw a sketch of the graph.

c. What is the domain for this problem given the context?

d. What is the range for this problem given the context?

e. What value of x gives the maximum volume?

f. What dimensions of the box give the maximum volume?

g. What is the maximum volume? (include correct units)

Unit 1 Review:

28. Solve 32 = | 5𝑎 + 8|

29. Solve |𝑥 − 7| ≥ 5

**Completing this review sheet alone does not totally prepare you for the test! Study quizzes, CFU’s, notes, and
look at homework assignments as well. This is an HONORS test, there may be a question that requires you to
put together concepts that has not previously appeared on a homework or quiz. Expect that! **
