Instructions: 1. Simple Bar Chart in Excel: a. Choose a country and create a simple bar graph in Excel that shows the annual percentage growth in GDP over a 10-year period. (You may wish to use the same country you will use for your final project.). i. Add a trendline. ii. Edit the chart so that the units are clearly labeled, there is a clear title, and below the title you include the source of the data. b. Copy and paste this graph into Microsoft Word. c. Below the graph, write a paragraph that answers the following questions: i. What was the annual GDP growth rate for your country in the first year of this 10-year period? The last period? ii. What was the average annual GDP growth rate over the 10-year period? iii. Has annual GDP growth trended up or down over the 10-year period? d. Save the Word document as “SimpleBar_YourLastName.”
2. Line Graph with Multiple Categories:
a. Compare the unemployment rates of three different countries over at least a 20-year period on the same graph. (You may wish to use the World Bank or St. Louis Fred Data for this). i. Download your data into Excel. ii. Create a line graph in Excel with years on the horizontal axis and the annual unemployment rate on the vertical axis. iii. Edit the chart so that the units are clearly labeled, there is a clear title, and below the title you include the source of the data. b. Copy and paste your chart into Powerpoint: i. Edit your graph so that is fits the PowerPoint slide. ii. Add data labels to the first and last observations for each of your three countries. iii. Animate your graph so that each line appears sequentially while clicking when in Slide Show mode. c. Save the PowerPoint slides as “MultipleLineGraph_YourLastName.”
3. Combo / Dual Axis Graph:
a. Explore the relationship between health and income for a country of your choice (not India). (You may wish to use the same country you will use for your final project.). You may wish to use World Bank Data for this. b. Specifically, perform the following: i. Choose an indicator of income (e.g., per capita GDP) ii. Choose an indicator of health (e.g., life expectancy, infant mortality). iii. Download this data over a period of at least 25 years. iv. Create a combination (dual axis) graph in Excel that plots years on the horizontal axis, your income variable on one vertical axis, and your health indicator on the other vertical axis. v. Ensure that your units are clearly labeled. c. Copy and paste your graph into Microsoft Word. d. Below the graph, answer the following questions in paragraph form: i. How has your income indicator changed over time? ii. How has your health indicator changed over time? iii. What is the relationship between your income variable and your health variable over time? (i.e., is it positive, negative, flat?) iv. What might be some reasons for this relationship? e. Save the MS Word document as “ComboGraph_YourLastName.”
