GEOL 425: Applications of Computers in Geo-Engineering

Midterm Test (Restricted Access)

EXAM LENGTH: About 1 Hour 50 Minutes

Guidelines:
- Ensure all steps in calculations are fully shown to gain maximum marks.
- Double-check numerical results for precision.
- Use only basic calculators (no programmable devices allowed). Refer to the provided
equations for assistance.

1. List the main features of data systems (5 in total). (10 scores)

2. From the below information, apply least-square fits to get the regression line formula. Use
an accuracy of up to 4 digits (e.g., 0.3578). Additionally, derive R² (Determination Factor). (30
points)
Variable X Variable Y
9.8 1.5
8.7 2.8
7.6 5.4
6.9 7.1
6.0 9.9

3. Below are values of axial stress (σₙ) vs shear force (τ) from rock friction testing. Using any
numeric approach (like inversion), find regression constants for the fit equation. Predict τ
when σₙ is 19 MPa. (50 marks)
Axial Load σₙ (MPa) Resulting Shear τ (MPa)
3 1.3
6 4.8
10 10.2
15 20.1
25 38.7

4. Observe the attached diagram and write functions N₁(R) and N₂(R) in terms of position
coordinate R. (20 points)
[Insert skewed diagram here]
Essential Relations for Reference:
1. R² = Sxy² / (Sxx x Syy)
2. Sxy = Σ(xy) - n(mean(x))(mean(y))
3. Sxx = Σ(x²) - n(mean(x))²
4. Syy = Σ(y²) - n(mean(y))²
